This is a bonus episode with a movie review of "The Hurt Locker" and "American Sniper," two movies that are important to me because they attempt to depict the war in which I participated from May 2005 to May 2006. If you want to request a review of a book or movie, go to my website at https://anchor.fm/hugh-henry and leave me a message. Thanks for listening!
I discuss both sides writing songs to celebrate their causes in the war and describe the first bloodshed in Missouri. An examination of images that the two sides created accompanies a lengthy description of the events in the blockbuster hit novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. I seek to answer the question, "What did Billy Yank and Johnny Reb think they were marching off to fight?" In time, as all long wars do, the war would become its own justification.
This episode contains biographies of Presidents Lincoln and Davis and a description of the Battle of Fort Sumter and its immediate aftermath. The second-wave secession resolutions of Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Tennessee followed those of their seven predecessors. The stakes were set: 11 Confederate States, four border states, and 19 United States after the recent addition of Kansas.
This episode tells about the events leading up to the election of 1860, the first wave of secession conventions from the Union, and sets the scene for President Lincoln's inauguration on March 4, 1861.
This gives a short bio and introduction to the podcast I plan to publish.
