After the "Starving Time" Jamestown was still struggling, but the introduction of a new crop would change their fortune. Tobacco would bring wealth to the colony and force it to look for a new form of labor when the system of Indentured Servitude failed.

Though Jamestown may have been England's first permanent settlement. It's survival was anything but certain. After floundering through its first winter, leadership of the colony was handed over to Captain John Smith whose harsh leadership would get results, but also make him enemies.
