As we continue our conversation about 1987 in Episode 12, we are joined once again by our first-ever in studio guest Mr. Kip Roe. Reminiscing about the old days, our early bands' first gigs, and many musical memories of the era, we get a phone call from some old friends and the nostalgia kicks into high gear. Reagan gives Gorby an ultimatum, the U.S. trades arms for hostages, Klaus Barbie and Rudolf Hess face the music. And speaking of music, as we so often do, 1987 was a pivotal year in the evolution of popular music. Hair metal begins its inevitable decline as “alternative” music goes mainstream and Grunge is right around the corner. And lastly, our selection for Movie of the Year for 1987 is a no-brainer!

For Episode 11, we welcome our very first ever in-studio guest Mr. Kip Roe to share in many memories, lots of laughs, and mega-medleys of Metal music and more as we wistfully look back on 1987. Underground Rock bands began their inexorable creep into the mainstream and all three of us found ourselves attending more concerts than we can recall. (But a stack of fading ticket stubs will jar the memory!) Starting bands of our own to get in on the grit, grime, crime, punishment, putative damages, hole in the wall clubs, hockey arenas, drug dens, concrete bunkers, burrito buggies, bottle bars, Top Hats, Jockey Clubs and other high decibel dungeons, it's easy to forget that pop radio was blaring cotton candy and cheesecake 24/7 back then. Blake finally chooses sides in the age-old Tiffany vs. Debbie Gibson rivalry, Kip divulges most if not all of what happened on the night of his first gig, and Ric continues to dwell on his glory daze in the first of many record store jobs.

We're back in the high life again, going to Graceland, and best of all, Blake finally tells the story of the first time he got arrested. Or was it all a dream?

Talkin' 'bout our love/hate relationship with the Power Ballads of the 1980s, this might be us at our loose and lucid, unscripted best. Little or no insight to be found here, just a tipsy stumble down memory lane to revisit some of the worst music to come from the Hair Metal era. Truth is: We love this shit. But much of it really is dreck.

The big story from the world of music in 1985 is unquestionably the Live Aid concerts that took place in London and Philadelphia on July 13th of that year. Featuring dozens of the biggest names in popular music the concerts drew crowds well in excess of 200,000 people. TV broadcasts around the world attracted an estimated 1.9 billion viewers in 150 countries who watched the concerts performed live. If accurate, this would equal nearly 40% of the world population at the time! Listen in as Ric and Blake discuss the various performances, myths, legends and anecdotes from that legendary day in the history of popular music.

Philly police drop bombs on their own city, the world’s most famous shipwreck is discovered at the bottom of the sea, planes are highjacked all over the world, and it’s the end of the road for Route 66. British scientists discover a hole in the earth’s ozone layer and elsewhere in the headlines in 1985, we see volcanos, the space shuttle, Weird Science, as well as the launch of the compact disc and Windows 1.0.
