My special guests are Chuck Walker, the executive director of IAAGF and Courtney Taylor of Veritex Community Bank. Please click the link and share with your golf loving friends. This is a great initiative for golf and the City of Dallas. Enjoy.
This episode is a good one with Dallas native Scott Verplank. The show is titled "One of Five," since Verplank, via his 1985 Western Open win, is one of only five amateurs to have won on the PGA Tour.
Russ Pate joins me as we have a free flowing conversation about Byron Nelson and his place in golf history and how the Dallas Salesmanship Club renamed the Dallas Open the Byron Nelson Classic in 1968 and how it has taken off from there with over $180 million raised for local charities.
We visit with author Mike Booker about his popular book The Tournament Golfer's Handbook. Joining us in the studio is golf author and former PGA Tour player Randy Wolff.
We visit with Volunteers of America CEO Mike King and Dallas media personality Tommy Finn, the host of Advocacy In Motion podcast, about the 11th playing of the Ascendant LPGA for the benefit of Volunteers of America this coming October at Old American Golf Club in The Colony.
We have a blast with golf writer and handicapper Dan Daly and ole TS -- my Trusty Sidekick George Machock in the studio to look at the 2023 golf season with a little singing thrown in for good measure. George is half Harvey Penick and half Willie Nelson!
We welcome golf course architect Jeff Brauer as our in-studio guest and Tempest Golf Club general manager Randy Wade calling in as we discuss the semi-private layout near Longview that is receiving much acclaim as a place to play in East Texas.

About Hit It Where They Mow
From the publisher's feed
Hosted by Pat Wheeler.
It was the Texas Golf Hall of Fame teacher Harvey Penick who told his star pupils Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite, "you'll enjoy golf a lot more if you hit it where they…
wow."
Such golfing wisdom is part of the colorful golf history of Texas, a history that is celebrated on Hit It Where They Mow (Talking Golf in Texas) hosted by Pat Wheeler. The shows will feature the players, courses and perspective that make golf the greatest game, all with a decided Texas slant.
A native Texan from Tyler, Wheeler played competitive golf in high school and at SMU where he earned a degree in journalism. After a career in insurance, Wheeler returned to his first love of sportswriting and has penned two books -- When Golf Was Fun and The Fringe Runner. He also hosted the radio show Texas Links on the Air for 10 years.
