  • The Rent vs. Buy Debate: Rethinking Homeownership and Wealth Building w/ Liza Akhvledziani Carew, Co-Founder & CEO of Chexy

“For me, being independent with money, especially as a woman, was something that, because I didn’t see my mom have that, I really wanted it… Which is what pushed me to go abroad, what pushed me to build a career here and take on all these risks.”  - Liza Akhvledziani Carew

If you're wondering if homeownership is possible—or if it's even the right choice for you—listen to this episode.

Today, Liza Akhvledziani Carew, Co-Founder and CEO of Chexy, joins the pod to share her journey from growing up in Belarus to immigrating to Canada and becoming a founder. Liza moved to chase her version of the "Canadian Dream" but realized despite her healthy six-figure salary, she feared finances, began overspending to cope, and couldn't figure out how to make her money work for her.

In this episode, she reflects on her shift in mindset during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led her to question her career and finances and ultimately co-found Chexy. Recently, the company raised $4.1 million to scale its rewards program, helping renters capitalize on their payments to start building wealth without owning a home. We discuss:

    • The struggles of building credit as an immigrant in Canada
    • How a scarcity mindset and overspending are two sides of the same coin
    • The renting vs. buying debate and how the fluidity of the modern workforce is changing things
    • The differences between the North American and European approach to homeownership
    • How Chexy's unique rewards program can help renters make their payments go further

  • Flipping the Script on Wealth: The Case for Democratizing Finance w/ Alexia Kitoko

“No one is coming to save you. And that’s the same for your financial life… If you don’t take ownership, nobody cares. You have to take ownership and you have to do the small steps in order to access financial independence and build wealth.” - Alexia Kitoko

  • Keeping Finance Personal w/ Ellyce Fulmore of Queerd Co.

"In my opinion, it's even more important than the numbers. Really understanding who you are and how that impacts the way you move through the world and your life is going to have such a big impact on your finances."  - Ellyce Fulmore

    Happy Halloween, $HMONEY hunnies! 👻

You're in for a vulnerable and insightful chat with founder, influencer, financial educator and advocate, Ellyce Fulmore.

When Ellyce started her financial journey, she had just $60 in her pocket and $35,000 in debt. In all attempts to improve her situation, following cookie-cutter solutions that didn't speak to her unique lifestyle got her nowhere. But through trial and error, she came up with Queerd Co.: a haven and resource filled with money strategies, tools, and resources that didn't force folks to reject pieces of their identity to succeed.

Ellyce has always believed the problem with so much of traditional finance education is that it doesn't consider who you are as a person. So, in this episode, we discuss:

    • Her money story
    • How venturing down the physiotherapy path and simultaneously hitting her financial rock bottom served as a wake-up call
    • The influence our personalities have on our money behaviours
    • Starting Queerd Co.
    • How being neurodivergent impacts money stories
    • The "dopamine deficiency" and how to add some back into your money system
    • Her signature "Neuro$picy Money Method" and shame-free, trauma-informed approach
    • Lifestyle changes she's made to alleviate daily stressors and help manage her money and well-being as someone living with ADHD
    • Her personal five-account banking system
    • The importance of intersectionality in everyone's money story and ability to build wealth
    • Her first book, Keeping Finance Personal
    • Voting with your dollars (practicing values-based spending) under capitalism
    • A scary-fun rapid-fire round
