Macon wanted to introduce our Listener to his most favoritest theologian, Thomas F. Torrance (aka TF Torrance). Alex and Marshall help him unpack the theological themes of Torrance from an early and short paper published in 1949.
Listener, you might want to read it before listening to the episode, but you don’t need to in order to enjoy the episode.
The paper in question: Thomas F. Torrance, "Universalism or Election," Scottish Journal of Theology 2 (1949): 310-318; #1949-033
If, in the end, you’re unimpressed by TFT, that is entirely the fault of Macon, and should have no bearing on your appreciation of the theological Titan, TF Torrance.
Fanboys gonna fanboy.
Show Notes:
Ted Lasso
Turns out, Marsh is on the cutting-edge of fashion right now. Footage of Marsh at the last funeral he attended. He's so hot right now.
Mahomes on Jacob’s performance on the mound.
The only Who Let The Dogs Out video you will ever need.
T.F. Torrance’s Life and Achievements
Actually, it was Scottish Journal of Theology. Though Scottish Theology ought to have its own Journal, too.
Bishop John Robinson
The Trinitarian Faith
It wasn’t WWI. Torrance was a chaplain in WWII. Management regrets this error.
Nicean Creed
T.F. Torrance, on Karl Barth.
The Filoque Controversy
Every day, we were Joel Miller.
Robinson’s argument, version 2019 —> David Bently Hart: That All Shall Be Saved
The passage Torrance translates on the last page of the paper is 2nd Corinthians 5:11-21.
Torrance wrote more fully about election in Christ in the paper: Predestination in Christ.
You couldn't only imagine that it could be this good. 10000% improvement.
“…his name is literally “Darth Father”
Inconceivable!
30 years ago, PFR asked, “why you would walk away from Love?”
Abjure was not the word. It means, literally, the extreme opposite of what Macon was trying to say.
Tendentious was on point, though.
