What a humbling interview with Vanessa Lowe the founder of "Come Talk With Me" and "Come Walk With Me" - a not-for-profit organisation Vanessa created after losing her 16-year-old son to suicide. On the 10th September every year, an event is held in Palmerston to raise awareness and to lift the stigma of mental health and suicide. This event was hosted for the first time in 2017 to honour firefighter, and former NTFRS employee and 1st Armoured Regiment Australian Soldier, Nathan "Mule" Shanahan, who succumbed to his demons and committed suicide in late 2016. Sadly many of our service men and women have succumb to Depression and PTSD and taken their own lives.

The walk / challenge is replicate of the walk Firefighter Nathan Shanahan completed in April 2015 from Mildura to Adelaide. Nathan walked over 400 kilometres with a 20 kilogram pack to raise awareness of PTSD and Depression.

More than 500 community members attended the first event in Darwin to walk either 5km, 10km, 15 or 20km with or without a pack on their backs symbolising the weight that depression can have on each individual. The pack symbolises the weight of depression and the equipment our service personnel and first respondents often carry. We will have a spectator rest area for our family and friends who will be offering all participants support on the day.
