  • Nurses: The Heartbeat of Healthcare

    Send us Fan Mail

Nurses stand as the heartbeat of healthcare, yet their invaluable work often goes unrecognized. This episode celebrates these extraordinary professionals who blend clinical expertise with profound humanity every single day.

Since my father was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015, it hasn't been just the medications that kept him going—it was the nurses who remembered his name, saved him window seats during infusions, and transformed hospital visits from dreaded necessities into moments of genuine human connection. Similarly, when my mother needed emergency care after being poisoned, a compassionate nurse became "our angel" during a terrifying time. These personal experiences reveal what statistics confirm: while nurses represent the most trusted profession in America for 22 consecutive years running, over 40% report burnout, with one in five considering leaving the field entirely.

Through their example, nurses teach us four powerful life lessons we can all apply: being fully present when it matters most, leading with empathy even under pressure, embracing continuous learning throughout our lives, and supporting team members without hesitation. These principles transcend healthcare, offering a blueprint for more meaningful human connection in every sphere of life. Whether you've been cared for by a nurse, love someone who is a nurse, or simply recognize their contributions, this episode invites you to move beyond a single week of appreciation and commit to supporting these healthcare heroes year-round.

Have you been touched by a nurse's care? Share this episode with someone who needs to hear it, and take a moment to thank a nurse in your life—through a message, a nomination for recognition, or simply by truly listening to them. The healing they provide extends far beyond medicine, and our gratitude should do the same.

  • The Power of Mentorship: Learning and Leading

    Send us Fan Mail

Have you ever wished for someone to guide you through life's challenges, or wondered if you could be that guiding light for someone else? Mentorship might be the missing piece in your journey.

In this heartfelt exploration of mentorship, we unpack what it truly means to guide and be guided. Far more than just giving advice, mentorship creates a relationship of intentional growth, encouragement, and accountability.

The benefits speak volumes – professionally, mentored employees are five times more likely to be promoted and report greater satisfaction. Spiritually, mentorship embodies Proverbs 27:17, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." We share practical steps for finding a mentor (pray, look around, start small, be consistent) and becoming a mentor (you don't need to have it all together, just be a step ahead and available).

Most importantly, we challenge the notion that you need to be perfect to mentor others. As one mentor wisely stated, "The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves." Whether you're guiding or being guided, mentorship offers mutual growth and the chance to make a lasting impact.

Ready to take that first step? Finding or becoming a mentor doesn't require a program or perfect timing – just a willingness to show up, listen well, and walk alongside another person in their journey. Share this episode with someone who might need this encouragement, and subscribe for more conversations that equip you to live with purpose.

On April 14, 2025, Gayle King made history—joining an all-female crew aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket for a 10-minute suborbital space flight. But this wasn’t just a milestone in space exploration—it was a bold statement about reinvention, representation, and the courage to say yes to the unfamiliar.

In this episode of Holly’s Highlights, we reflect on the power of presence, the bravery of vulnerability, and what it means to pursue purpose at any age. Joined by incredible women like Lauren Sánchez, Katy Perry, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn, this mission was more than a flight—it was a reminder that it’s never too late to rise.

Whether you're launching into a new career, breaking free from old labels, or learning to show up fully as yourself—this one’s for you.

  • Embracing the Unknown: Finding Joy in Life's Surprises

    Send us Fan Mail

A chance encounter at an animal shelter forever changed my family's life when an elegant stranger—like someone from a Gene Kelly movie—decided to adopt a dog for us. Despite all my explanations of why we couldn't take a dog home, this mysterious "fairy dogmother" completed the adoption process and even offered to pay for a year of insurance. My son cried with joy while I remained in shock.

What began as a "sleepover" for this unexpected pet gradually revealed itself as something more profound. The "coincidences" kept mounting: the dog shared my birthday, had only been in the shelter for a day after his elderly owner had to move to senior living, and seemed to fit perfectly into our lives despite my hesitation.

After 30 days of what we called "fostering," our family made the decision to keep him permanently. This journey through pet loss, grief, and unexpected joy reminded me of the verse that's carried me through many seasons: "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). Sometimes blessings arrive in the most unexpected packages, and when life feels surreal, remember there are no accidents in God's plans.

Whatever challenges you're facing—loss, fear, change, uncertainty—remain open to the possibility that something beautiful may be waiting just around the corner. Have you experienced a "God thing" that changed your life? I'd love to hear your story! Connect with me on Facebook at Holly's Highlights or Instagram at Holly Curby and share your unexpected blessings.

  • Leading Like a Director: Theater Skills for Leadership

    Send us Fan Mail

What script are you telling as a leader? Drawing from years of theater experience—from acting to directing community productions—Holly Curby reveals how leadership resembles directing a play in this illuminating episode. Just as directors set the stage, communicate vision, and develop their cast, great leaders create environments where team members understand their roles and feel empowered to excel.

Discover how to "set the stage" properly in your leadership context. Are new team members greeted warmly? Is your physical space welcoming and intuitive? Do family members have what they need when they arrive home? These seemingly small details create powerful first impressions that either invite engagement or prompt retreat. As Holly explains through vivid examples from both business and family settings, intentional stage-setting allows you to craft the experiences you want others to have.

Beyond creating environments, leadership requires providing the right "props"—tools and resources that enable success—and developing your team through clarity, empowerment, and courageous conversations. Through personal stories (including a lead actor abandoning a production three days before opening!), Holly demonstrates that leadership isn't about avoiding mistakes but learning from them. Perhaps most powerfully, she introduces her concept of "experiencing the experience"—intentionally observing how others interact with your systems to continuously improve them. Remember: every person in your sphere has a story you don't know, and your leadership script has the power to enhance that story. Subscribe now and learn how to craft a leadership narrative worth following!
