Publisher's Summary:
The nation is divided, and a bloody Civil War looms on the horizon. Two young men enlist, each with very different strengths, weaknesses, and reasons for service. They end up on opposite sides of the battle, though, in the end, they learn largely the same lessons about honor, human nature, and the horrors of war.
Before the Civil War had even begun, these young men, Zach and Luke, had already crossed paths while fishing in eastern Tennessee. After they parted ways, they never expected to later be pitted against each other in war - but, when Zach joined the Northern cause and Luke joined the Southern, that's exactly what happened.
On the battlefields, each boy learns invaluable lessons about himself, and both contribute to the outcome of battles and, ultimately, to the war. Their lives are forever changed by all that they encounter, but their story does not alter the actual course of history in any way.
Home Again is a rare piece of historical fiction that recounts Civil War experiences in strict compliance to recorded historic detail. Yet as historically accurate as it is, it is also incredibly insightful and compelling, and is sure to entertain both your heart and your mind.

"Home Again" Blends Fiction and Fact
The research that went into this page turner book about the Civil War is amazing. Michael Kenneth Smith has written a fictional story of two boys, Zach and Luke, who are drawn into the complexities and anguish of war, one fighting for the North, one for the South. Each boy is eager to join the fight, but their innocence is shattered as the story takes them (and the reader) through the mayhem of wartime experience. Smith tells their story empowered by the accuracy of historical fact which is what makes this story so compelling. We learn about the battles, the leadership on both sides, the primitive ways of communication, methods of fighting, and details about day to day survival of weary fighters as well as the bravery of wounded soldiers and the dedication of the doctors who try to help them. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a powerful story with a strong jolt of truth. I'll be looking for this author's next book.

This novel follows the lives of two young men who meet by chance and end up on opposite sides in the Civil War....they encounter each other at least twice during the war but are unaware of it. The alternating chapters following their paths during the conflict keeps the book flowing nicely. Historically correct in the context of the Civil Wart these two fictional characters are well developed. The description of the chaos and loss at Shiloh is particularly riveting. This is worth taking the time to read.

It's unmistakable from the opening pages that Home Again is a fresh and engrossing examination of a war that many Americans know intimately when Smith introduces Luke and Zach in conventional home environments wildly different from that which they soon encounter. Casting these imagined characters in an otherwise meticulously researched authentic account of America's most ruinous war, an oft attempted technique, works for author Smith owing to his evident diligence.
