If I never see Kristoff Wellesley alive again, it will be too soon!
He insinuated himself into our family before anyone noticed. He aided my brother, Whitcomb, to enter the British Navy. Then he charmed my mama and my sisters with his noble manners and dubious aplomb.
But I know the truth. He is charlatan and a lying, scheming rake! He thinks he has pulled the wool over my eyes. Yet I am the sheep bearing a gift. Now that he is a Duke, he believes he is untouchable. But I have discovered he used my family to gain title and advantage, destroying my mother's happiness and preventing my brother from returning home.
I won't let him get away with it. I will repay him the pain and suffering he caused me and my family - but not before I grant him the greatest pleasure he has ever known. We are married, and I have waited an eternity for tonight.
I have heard revenge is a dish best served cold. And I plan to give the Duke his recompense that will chill even the darkest corners of Newgate. I will not rest until I destroy the Duke, and I have saved his best surprise for last!

If you're going to write a book, you have to go beyond having a decent plot.
If I could give less than one star for this book, I would. It is the worst written book I've ever read. It was all over the place, first she's here, then over here, then in the middle of something over there, then back to point one, then a random piece of information that you know is going to come up later.
This should have been a first draft, of what could have been a very interesting book. I've read fanfictions more thought through and developed than this book.
If it had been me who had written this, I would have been ashamed to accept any money for it.

Title: The Search for the Lost Army

    Narrator: Tom Kruse
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 21 mins

    Release date: 12-21-15
Publisher: Bettie Youngs Book Publishers Co., Inc.
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In one of history's greatest ancient disasters, a Persian army of 50,000 soldiers was suffocated by a hurricane-force sandstorm in 525 BC in Egypt's Western Desert. No trace of this conquering army, hauling huge quantities of looted gold and silver, has ever surfaced. Nearly 25 centuries later on October 6, 1981, Egyptian Military Intelligence, the CIA, and Israel's Mossad secretly orchestrated the assassination of President Anwar Sadat, hoping to prevent Egypt's descent - as had befallen Iran two years before - into the hands of Islamic zealots. Because he had made peace with Israel and therefore had become a marked man in Egypt and the Middle East, Sadat had to be sacrificed to preserve the status quo. These two distant events become intimately interwoven in the story of Alex Goodman, who defeats impossible obstacles as he leads a Harvard University/National Geographic Society archaeological expedition into Egypt's Great Sand Sea in search of the Lost Army of Cambyses, the demons that haunt him, and the woman he loves.
    Based on a true story.

Strong on Adventure and Weak on Romance, but Who Cares?
I liked this book because of its quick pace and fascinating historic and adventure story lines. Chafetz is clearly an excellent researcher; and the parts that were pure fiction fit in well with the broader tale of the Lost Army and his view of Egyptian politics. Just as clearly, he is either less skilled or--more likely--less interested in and impatient about writing the love story and the hero's back story; and this shows throughout the book. Still, as the Great Gatsby said, those parts are "only personal"; and I can read the romantic genre anywhere. This book made me want to know more about the Lost Army, Persian history, and the era encompassing 525 BC.
A very exciting book...worth the stellar reviews:
This book has "special" reviews...a good idea of what a solid and exciting this is.
"A rousing mix of fact and fantasy that creates an illusion of reality through the specificity of its detail--historical and imaginative. A great adventure story." --Daniel Aaron, author of The Unwritten War: American Writers and the Civil War (a National Book Award finalist), is the Victor S. Thomas Professor of English and American Literature Emeritus at Harvard University; the founding president of the Library of America; and the recipient of a 2010 Presidential National Humanities Medal
"Gary Chafetz has woven an extraordinary saga of the doomed Persian Lost Army of 525, BC into the rather suspect "assassination" of modÂern Egypt's President Anwar Sadat. Part archaeology, part guerilla battles, and part romance, you will find the trials and tribulations of the three principal characters as mesmerizing as any in The Raiders of the Lost Arc films. Truly, a monumental achievement." --Jeremiah Healy is the award-winning (the Shamus Award for best detective fiction) author of 18 novels; and past president of the International Crime Writers Association; past president of Private Eye Writers of America
    "An epic, thundering historical thriller.

Needs editing...big time, not a bad plot
While the book needed severe editing, I'll admit was a pretty good story. I had difficulty wading through all the mistakes. It started off being told in the present tense, switched back and forth between past and present. Question marks were used where exclamation marks should have been. Basically, the thing needed to be edited severely. If someone were going back to 1882, I don't think the young lady would have referred to them as 'you guys'.
But for a very quick, fun read and if you aren't into grammatically correct, it was a good read. But c'mon, they go through a storm and the guy ends up being Sheriff? I think this author needs to stick with writing children's books.
    Five Stars
A very fun read and great twisting story.
A Trip Into The Twilight Zone
DG has written a western novel with a twist. A sailing trip in 2015 , which ends in a storm, end with two men transported to 1880's. Then the real adventure begins. This is an excellent read for the genre.....ER
I recommend this book to anyone who reads!
Dennis has a hit! This is a great book! I found it to be spellbinding. I couldn't wait to turn the page to find out what was going to happen next!
    Wow - this was bad.
Wow - this was bad. I gave up after the first few chapters due to the poor writing style and stilted dialogue between characters. Several egregious story inconsistencies in the first few chapters. Sailboat? Power boat? Next to shore, then an hour out in the next moment? Yikes. I gave up.

The theatres are padlocked. Christmas has been cancelled. It is 1657, and the unloved English Republic is eight years old. Though Cromwell's joyless grip on power appears immovable, many still look to Charles Stuart's dissolute and threadbare court-in-exile, and some are prepared to risk their lives plotting a restoration.
For the officers of the Republic, constant vigilance is needed. So, when the bloody corpse of a Royalist spy is discovered on the dung heap of a small Essex village, why is the local magistrate so reluctant to investigate? John Grey, a young lawyer with no clients, finds himself alone in believing that the murdered man deserves justice.
Grey is drawn into a vortex of plot and counterplot and into the all-encompassing web of intrigue spun by Cromwell's own spymaster, John Thurloe. So when nothing is what is seems, can Grey trust anyone?

    Language: English

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The emerging societies of the Caribbean in the 17th century were a riotous assembly of pirates, aristocrats, revolutionaries, and rogues - outcasts and fortune seekers all. In They're Cows, We're Pigs, acclaimed Mexican novelist Carmen Boullosa animates this world of bloody chaos and uncertain possibility through the eyes of the young Jean Smeeks, kidnapped in Flanders at age 13 and sold into indentured servitude on Tortuga, the mythical Treasure Island. Trained in the magic of medicine by le Negre Miel, an African slave healer, and Pineau, a French-born surgeon, Smeeks signs on as a medical officer with the pirate band the Brethren of the Coast.
Transformed by the looting and violence of pirate life, Smeeks finds himself both healer and despoiler, servant and mercenary, suspended between the worlds of the law-abiding, tradition-bound "cows" and the freely roaming and raiding "pigs".
    Members Reviews:
A Brief but Fascinating Pirate Tale
Carmen Boullosa examines the society created by the Brethren of the Coast, 17th century Caribbean freebooters on the island of Tortuga. It is a communal society, purposely without women, a fact which allows property to be shared and men to coexist harmoniously. Into this world steps Jan Smeeks, a boy kidnapped from Flanders, who embodies both male and female characteristics. Smeeks is astounded by the roving, plundering, male "pig" characteristics of the Brethren, but he learns to despise the sedentary, civilized, female "cow" characteristics of the colonists and settlers.
Boullosa's characterization of Smeeks is particularly sensitive. His little-boy wonder when he touches his first female breast, his comment that he always seems to notice the little details of a situation while missing the larger picture (a trait which makes him an interesting narrator), his fascination with Dr.Pineau's existential pontifications, all mark him as something apart from the other freebooters.
The book is a good one, it is interesting to think about the ideal communal society predicated on the most appalling slaughter, on the role played by the presence and absence of women - Eve in the Garden. However, I wished the book were longer. No characters beyond Smeeks are fully drawn, and the abbreviated narrative leaves many gaps which the reader is left to fill with imagination. There are strong images: the Jamaican brothel, and the monks and nuns who refuse to be used as human shields. There are weak images: the hurricane that kills dozens is not described at all. We just wake up the next day. The translation is occasionally jerky: "L'Olonnais had the injured Spaniards who remained on the path finished off after he asked them for what he wanted." (p.164). But overall it is a fun and interesting book. Boullosa has much to share.
    Son vacas somos puercos
I love some of her other books and was pretty disappointed by this one. Try La Milagrosa or Cielos de la tierra for some better reading.

Maya Lord probes the impact of culture clash on adventurers struggling in a tumultuous world unlike anything they could have imagined. Producer/director Roland Emmerich has purchased the screen rights to Maya Lord.
    Members Reviews:
Author's should be authors, not narrators.
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The book is being read by the author. Maybe he is a fine author, but his voice is monotone, and he reads so quickly with no attention to punctuation or phrasing. It is so bad that it is very hard to follow the story at times. It may be a good story, but I stopped listening about half way through because the narration is so bad I was having trouble following the dialogue. There are so many other great books on Audible that it was not worth my time to struggle through.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
    Get a different narrator.
Would you be willing to try another one of John Coe Robbinss performances?
    No
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Maya Lord?
Not necessarily any, but see my other comments.
