We’re stoked to finally have Richard Cizik, co-founder of the New Evangelical Partnership for the Common Good and former Vice President at the National Evangelical Association, on the show. He spent nearly three decades at the NAE until he became a wee bit too tolerant of the gays and concerned about the earth. Cizik talks about what constitutes a “new evangelical,” the power of Christian hegemony and how little it takes to lose all standing with the old evangelical guard.

We continue talking about hegemony in the echo chamber, chatting up Paul Kivel’s new book, “Living in the Shadow of the Cross.” Turns out the reach of Christendom within the United States has a broader reach in our culture than just within organized religion. Go figure.

Jess the Intern shares her fear of the week (thanks a lot, Bill Clinton), and in recommendations, Christian gives props to another book from fellow Portlanders, and Andy Campbell talks up the best stout beers to pick up this season.

Oh, and Jess also explains how it is that yogurt actually has feelings. Worth the price of admission for this alone.

First, we want to welcome the inimitable Andy Campbell, who is sitting in for Jordan Green while he attends to family matters. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Green family during this difficult time.

We cover a lot of ground in this edition of the culture cast. In the echo chamber, we let Amy vent about her pick for the Nobel Peace Prize this year being passed over. Geez, Amy, keep it in perspective. It’s not like it’s the Oscars or something.

We also talk about a new medically-based project launched by Google, called Calico, which endeavors to figure out the whole “death thing.” We try to figure out why it is that our culture seems to do death so poorly, and how Christianity actually has an opportunity to do something better than Google for once.

In recommendations, we pine over the seasonal fantasticalness that is fresh hop beer. And then a conversation that begins by comparing Sinead O’Connor’s head shaving to a similar stunt by Miley Cyrus leads us into a rich and interesting conversation about human sexuality, body image and power.

So there you have it: beer, pop culture, sex, theology and technology. What more could you possibly ask for? On second thought, don’t answer that because this is all you get…and you’ll like it!

Our guest for this week unexpectedly fell through, so you get a full dose of Christian, Amy and Jordan this time.

We start out by taking it to our esteemed legislators in D.C. for their inability to get along with others as well as we expect by four-year-old daughter to behave. And after a fairly substantive excavation of all things political and socio-economic, we move on to Jordan’s favorite topic: FOOD.

Jordan is fairly obsessed with extolling the virtues of MSG lately, so when the cover story on this month’s Wried Magazine was all about “umami,” and what makes certain foods taste so amazing, he basically blissed out. Want to hear Jordan get ecstatic about a Taco Bell Doritos Locos taco? This is the show for you, my friend.

Finally, we break down the new fall Television season, highlighting the shows we have on our “must watch list.” Think of it as our gift to you; we suffer through hours of couch time so you don’t have to.

This episode has been in the hopper for a bit, so don’t be mad at us for talking about 9/11 and flooding in Colorado.

We start things off strong with a discussion of which gender and sexual orientation is best to get compliments from, an appearance from the famous Mattias Piatt, who provides some advice on breaking arms.

Our guest this week is Amanda Bast, an extremely funny writer who’s article “26, Unmarried, and Childless” blew up Converge Magazine, garnering over a million views in four days. Amanda discusses the article, which questions our culture’s approach to constant concern over what’s next, what it’s like to have a blog post go extremely viral, and what it’s like to be a young teacher in Ontario, Canada.

In the Echo Chamber, we reflect on 9/11, and specifically the overreaction and fear the attacks engender in Americans 13 years later. Then I ranted about how Americans should be brave.

In a change of pace, Christian takes this week’s Fear o’ the Week, and he’s scared of spider season. Especially the succulent ones. Then, the gang recommends some books, particularly Nadia Bolz-Weber’s bestselling Pastrix, and 1491, a book about the Americas before Columbus landed that will blow your mind and change everything you know about the people who lived here before white folks showed up and accidentally killed nearly all of them.
