Homeschooling with Technology

As we homeschool, we do have to consider if we are preparing our children for jobs of the future and that is what we consider in this episode.

Some of the ideas mentioned are:

1. Will the job still exist – and if so, will it be changed in any way?

2. Technological know-how job seekers will need

3. They may need to know how to program

4. They will need to know how to work virtually

5. Make sure they know how to teach themselves new skills

6. A skill they will still need – how to write well

7. Problem solving will always be an important ability

8. Creativity will be too

9. Ethics relating to a changing technological world

This could mean less memorization in your homeschool and more emphasis on curriculum that encourages problem-solving and creativity and incorporates technology and online work.

3. Watch TV shows and movies in foreign languages

4. Set shopping sites to the language you are learning

5. Use the Toucan web extension to integrate Spanish words into the websites you choose

6. Set your phone to Spanish

These ideas may spur you to further ideas – using tech or even without tech on ways to integrate foreign language learning into your daily life

Minecraft Earth is an augmented reality app that could be described as a cross between Minecraft and Pokemon GO. It gets students moving because they have to move to collect resources and it gets them creating as they build their own worlds.

Students can not only build, but can also participate in Adventures and take on Challenges. As they progress through the game they accumulate points and level up. Leveling up as well as completing challenges earns rewards.

Students can take items they collect and can either use them as is or, turn them into something else by selecting the “make stuff” option and completing a recipe.

I have also just played alone, but there is also the option of playing with friends.

The app is free and available in the App Store and Google Play Store
