Usually a bug out bag is intended to be used when you “bug out” or get the heck out of dodge. That’s pretty extreme in today’s society, but I believe every person needs a bug out bag as an immediate resource and insurance policy for freezes, floods, power outages, long distance travel in bad weather, or just for every day use to have all of your resources in one organized location.

For the past couple decades, the buzz phrase in ornamental landscape gardening has been “drought tolerant” and “ native plants,” but drought tolerance doesn’t do you any favors in a freeze AND Texas has so many different growing regions that a Texas native plant may not be suited for your area. In this episode, I’ll introduce you to alternative ornamental shrubs including native and adapted plants that are extremely freeze tolerant, some perennials to consider, how to care for deciduous plants or woody perennials in cold weather, and which drought tolerant plants you should actually avoid in the Houston area and why.

She volunteered at various animal  shelters and worked hard to get a Bachelor’s in Behavioral Neuroscience and a Master’s in Animal Shelter Management.  Most of her career has been working in marketing, social media, and  business development for veterinary clinics and animal shelters. I have rarely succeeded at growing a really large healthy plant in containers, but I’ve especially struggled growing plants indoors. Light, airflow, temperature, fertilizing, watering but not watering too much are all things I can’t seem to wrap my head around consistently enough to be successful at growing plants indoors. Container gardening is difficult to do especially if you have a busy schedule or travel, or maybe you are just more forgetful like me.

So, when I was asked this year to do a podcast episode on growing plants in containers, I knew I was no expert. I reached out to Olivia with @container_garden_central because she has mastered container gardening and indoor growing. Hailing from northwest Pennsylvania in zone 6a, Olivia is challenged with really crazy weather and a short growing season outdoors. Growing year-round is important to her, and she'll share some of her tips and tricks to how she grows indoors and in containers to achieve this goal.
