                • Druck Report: Rome's confusing City Commission elections -- what will it take to get voters engaged both now and in 2020? Wendy Davis has some ideas and answers.

All elections are important but what's before Rome voters on Nov. 5 (and in advance) finds the community at a cross roads. With six commission seats to fill and five incumbents and four challengers on the ballot, will voters stay the course or seek changes that will take us through the next four years? At least one new face is guaranteed; will we see more?

Rome City Commissioner Wendy Davis, who's not on the ballot this year, talks about the 2019 election. Our questions:

                  • Voter engagement: Early indicators show a light turnout. How can candidates and media better engage would-be voters?
                  • Campaign trends: Has social media taken the place of 'kissin' babies and shaking hands'?
                  • Rome's confusing ward voting: Two "wards" are on the ballot, each with three seats, so any city voter can pick up to three candidates in each ward to support. Is there an easier, clearer way to elect our commissioners?
                  • Election dysfunction: A different advance voting location. No weekend voting at first. Why has this race been so different from elections two or four years ago? How can early issues be avoided next time?
                  • About this podcast: Wendy joined us recently at Brand Red Studios to talk about the commission elections and the 2020 vote.  We thank Brand Red for their production support of our long-form podcasts and Todd LaBerge for another excellent job producing this conversation. The Druck Report is a production of Hometown Headlines Inc.
