    • Druck Report: Eric McDowell on the escalating battle to keep Sleep Inn out of Summerville Park -- and how to help.

Eric McDowell of the Summerville Park Neighborhood Association has twice spoken before Rome's City Commission in a bid to stop Sleep Inn -- part of the Choice Hotel brands -- from building a 52-room hotel that will have an entrance and exit on Charlton Street and encroach into the residential community by removing a home built in the 1920s. The city repeatedly has said it can't stop the project.

Developer Tony Patel has the zoning needed to build the hotel, a move residents fear because of not only noise and light pollution but also because of crime associated with other rundown motels up and down Martha Berry with a mile of the designated Heritage Neighborhood founded in 1913.

McDowell and his neighbors believe there are other options, including buying the three lots from the developer in hopes of restoring the Charlton home and offering the property fronting Martha Berry for office or restaurant development.

He walks us through what's next -- and what's special -- about Summerville Park.

Eric joined us for this podcast at Brand Red Studios, 4 Bale St. off Fifth Avenue in downtown Rome. We thank Todd LaBerge for another round of solid podcast production.
