We were created in goodness. We were captured by the evil one. But even as we are trapped in the darkness of sin and death, trapped with no hope of escape from the dominion of evil, the rightful king lands on Satan's shores, having already triumphed- and behold, He makes all things new.

If God created us in such goodness, why do we see such evil in the world and in ourselves? The world cannot answer, nor can philosophy. Only the Good News of Jesus Christ can tell us. And for us to know Him, we have to know what- or who- He saves us from.

Who knows why this man couldn’t hear and speak? Imagine how much suffering he underwent! The isolation, the misunderstanding, feeling cut off from relationship. Regardless, now, he is before Jesus: “Here is your God, he comes with vindication… The will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared” (Is. 35:5). And in our own spiritual deafness and inability to speak, the Lord asks us to let him heal us, to speak His “ephphatha” to us, in three ways.

To heal, a doctor must learn about sickness: what attacks, corrupts, harms or defiles the human body. So it is with Jesus, the Divine Physician who heals our hearts and souls. But what defiles the human heart? How do we diagnose it? How do we begin to heal?

Today the Word of God asks us to make a choice. Today Jesus concludes his teaching on the most important reality in the universe, His real, substantial presence in the Holy Eucharist. After weeks of exploring this profound mystery of His love, we come to its culmination in a choice: whether or not to believe Him and to be defined by the mystery of the Holy Eucharist.
