Asking for what you want is an act of vulnerability. The reason we're not good at it is that we've been shamed ("don't be so selfish") and punished for wanting: "if you don't stop acting like this, you can walk home alone".
Therefore, we found indirect ways how to demand and manipulate our environment into giving us what we want, although, most often we get what we don't want. How come?
