This week on Honest A$$holes with Mr Vega, we’re having a conversation that the hip-hop podcast world needs to hear.

Podcasting has given artists, producers, executives, and people who were behind the scenes an opportunity to finally tell their stories. That can be powerful. But somewhere along the way, has negativity, old beef, industry grudges, and tearing people down become more valuable than actually educating and uplifting the culture?

On this episode, I’m asking a serious question: Are hip-hop podcasts building the culture—or slowly destroying it?

We’re talking about former artists who have transitioned into podcasting but seem to spend more time discussing everything their former record labels, executives, managers, and fellow artists supposedly did wrong than sharing knowledge that could help the next generation. There is absolutely nothing wrong with exposing bad business or telling your truth—but when does telling your story turn into monetizing bitterness?

And we have to talk about the other side too. Record companies and executives aren’t above accountability. Artists have been exploited, misled, underpaid, and placed in bad contracts throughout the history of the music business. Those stories deserve to be heard. But imagine how much more powerful those conversations could become if the pain was turned into education.

Instead of simply telling young artists “the industry screwed me,” teach them about publishing, masters, contracts, ownership, management, touring, branding, financial literacy, and protecting their careers.

We’re also getting into the role of social media algorithms and why controversy gets clicks, beef gets views, and negativity goes viral, while positive conversations about growth and success often struggle to receive the same attention.

At some point, we have to ask ourselves:

Are we documenting hip-hop history—or just documenting hip-hop grudges?

This isn’t about silencing anybody. It’s about challenging everyone with a platform—including myself—to think about what we’re contributing to the culture.

Tell your story. Speak your truth. Hold people accountable. But after the story has been told, what are you teaching the people coming behind you?
