My name is Jordan Gurkin and I am 26 years old. I grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and I went to college at Wake Forest University. I graduated in 2014 with a degree in Business Management with concentrations in International Sales and Marketing and Non-Profit Management. While in college I studied abroad in Venice, Italy, for a semester where I discovered my love for traveling and different cultures. Right after my semester abroad I completed an internship in Madrid, Spain, where I worked for Campofrio Food Group which is a CPG company focusing on pork products. The following summer after my junior year, I had an internship in Sacramento, California, working for Kelloggs.
Upon graduating, I went to work for PepsiCo on their Gatorade, Quaker, and Tropicana brands. I was recruited into a fast track sales program where I changed jobs and cities every 12-18 months. During that time I lived and worked in Dallas, New Orleans, and Philadelphia as a sales rep. and later as an account manager.
In the summer of 2017, I came to the conclusion that corporate america wasn’t the right fit for me and I decided to leave my job with PepsiCo and move to Argentina to teach English. I moved to Mendoza, which is known for producing Malbec wine and is also close to the Andes Mountains. I lived here for 5 months and in December 2017, their summer, I finished my teaching job and started backpacking around South America. I spent the next 6 months in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru having amazing adventures such as climbing a mountain of almost 20,000ft, rafting class 4 rapids, and hiking an active volcano. During this time I met some incredible people and started to better understand who I was and what I wanted in life.
Upon my return to the U.S. in May 2018, I spend 6 months volunteering for a non-profit called Compassion International which is a christian organization focusing on relieving kids from extreme poverty by connecting them with sponsors. The sponsorship provides them with food, medical care, and the children write letters back and forth with their sponsors where they receive the love and encouragement they need.
In December of this past year, I moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I am currently working for the ski resort as a rental tech for their kids ski school and as a waitress. I am skiing almost every day and I am excited for what is next
