Steph Hickling Beckman is co-founder of Different Strokes! Performing Arts Collective, a 501(c) 3 certified non-profit organization which purposes to increase and sustain opportunities for more diversity within the Western North Carolina performing arts community, by producing, and working with other performance artists or groups to present works which confront issues of social diversity in a provocative way; and by providing opportunities for audiences to explore visions of our diverse world.

In addition to being a wife, and mother to. 5yr old, Steph serves as Managing Artistic Director for DSPAC, and has directed 15 of the Company’s 26 productions since it’s inception in 2011. She has been active in Asheville North Carolina’s theatre scene since 1997, and has worked with several local theatre companies as an Actor, Director and in various other technical capacities including Producer.

Additional contributions to the community have included service on the boards of Directors for Youth OUTright, Western North Carolina AIDS Project, The Magnetic Theater, Montford Park Players, Black Mountain Arts Center, Asheville Contemporary Dance Theater, and The Center for Diversity and Education at UNCA.

Tayria Ward has a Ph.D. in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California. Tayria lived for 30 years in the Los Angeles area where she raised her family, worked for 20 years as a minister and later as a professor at undergraduate and graduate levels. In 2004 she moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina to found Bridging Worlds Mountain Retreat Center. Aurora Lagattuta is both childlike and witchlike. Her highly embodied pieces often use multiple lanuages, poetry, song, abstract narratives, video and live scuplture with dance and theatrical movement. Her work has been described as being, “bizarre and beautiful” as well as “transformational” and “otherwordly” by the Huffington Post. She has created works ranging from community projects to ensemble and solo performances for site-specific and theatre venues across U.S.A., Europe and Asia. Throughout these travels, she has studied various dance and theatre modalities to develop my own particular dance theatre language that exposes the beauty of the eccentric and expressive body.
Her aesthetic vision provides a trancelike and repetitive dream language that expresses the repressed aspects of the awkward and fragile body. This vision encompasses several foci: 1) isolated gestural textures; 2) exploration of contrasting emotional worlds—vacillating between violence and gentleness, strength and fragility, and anger and forgiveness; and 3) exposure of the exquisite diversity of the human experience.
She has been awarded residencies at Bali Purnati in Bali, Indonesia; La Caldera in Barcelona, Spain; Palacio de Festivales and Espacio Espiral in Santander, Spain; and Forn de La Calc in Catalunya, Spain. She was a P.O.R.C.H. (Ponderosa Ongoing Research Collaboration Happenings) recipient at Ponderosa in Germany and achieved a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 for her solo, Inside the Whale. She has danced for various companies in NYC, Portland, Germany and Spain, most notably were with Meg Stuart in Germany and Marta Carrasco in Spain. This past fall 2015, she performed her solo, Inside the Whale, at the United Solo Festival in New York City where she was awarded, The Best Multi-Media Solo Award and the United Solo Award. The United Solo Award took Lagattuta’s solo to Warsaw to be performed at the United Solo Europe Festival at Theatr Syrena in Warsaw, Poland. She holds a B.A. in Theatre Directing as well as the Theatre Award of Excellence from Fordham at Lincoln Center, New York, City; 2008.
