The prior verse mentioned Jesus, and His willingness to endure suffering for the sake of future joy. In particular, Jesus' attitude towards suffering is important. The fact of His persecution is, of course, meaningful. However, as used here, the more crucial point is that Jesus saw those hardships as part of God's plan, and a plan for Jesus' own benefit!Here, the writer emphasizes that we should take the same approach when faced with trials of our own.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Hebrews 11:6

This is a popular verse from the book of Hebrews, and also one easily misunderstood out of context. Taken all by itself, the verse presents a truth which is fairly easy to understand. Namely, that God's first and foremost concern is with our faith—our attitude towards Him and trust in Him—rather than in our actions. This does not make our behaviors unimportant. On the contrary: what we do reflects what we truly believe (James 2:14-17)

However, as this verse shows, merely "going through the motions" is not what God is looking for. Those who want to please God need to have faith, not simple agreement, and not merely reluctant cooperation.The problem with quoting or reading this verse out of its context is the specter of "blind faith," or wishful thinking. As shown in prior passages, the writer of Hebrews is not advocating for a gullible, wishful-thinking attitude. On the contrary, this entire letter has been an exercise in evidence and logic. The writer's point is meant to emphasize the primacy of true faith over insincere works: robotic obedience without legitimate trust in God is worthless. This lesson is given as part of a description of Old Testament figures whose actions prove their faith.

Hebrews 11:1 is my favorite for many reasons, but the reminder of this entire passage is rooted there for me.

But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me. Micah 7;7

The prophet bemoans himself that he lived among a people ripening apace for ruin, in which many good persons would suffer. Men had no comfort, no satisfaction in their own families or in their nearest relations. Contempt and violation of domestic duties are a sad symptom of universal corruption. Those are never likely to come to good who are undutiful to their parents. The prophet saw no safety or comfort but in looking to the Lord, and waiting on God his salvation. When under trials, we should look continually to our Divine Redeemer, that we may have strength and grace to trust in him, and to be examples to those around us.

God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Colossians 1:27

The "mystery" of Christ mentioned in the previous verse was both for Jews and Gentiles. In addition to mystery, Paul here notes God's sovereignty, which is His perfect and all-encompassing knowledge and control.

The revelation came only when God chose to make it happen.

This mystery was "great" both in content and impact among the Gentiles, including to the Colossian believers.The glory of this mystery "is Christ in you, the hope of glory." Christ came to earth and also now lives in those who believe. Interestingly, this is the one place in Paul's letters he uses the explicit phrasing of Christ

"in you."

He seeks to make the gospel message very personal for these Colossian Christians, whom he has never personally met. With Christ in you, as a saved believer, you have the "hope of glory."

In other words, a believer can be confident of eternity with Christ in heaven when he or she knows Christ is already in them now.

Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will Romans 12:2

Romans 12:2 is a call to transform 🕯️ oneself by changing the way one thinks, rather than conforming to the world's behavior and customs. The verse suggests that one can discern God's will by renewing their mind and testing what is good, acceptable, and perfect.

“My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him.” That one little letter changed everything. The difference between human expectations and Godly expectation is more significant than it seems.

Prayer for All Saints Day Dear God, thank you for the example of the Saints. I desire to join in their company, worshiping you forever in Heaven. Please help me follow their footsteps, and yours, Jesus Christ. Please help me to conform myself to Your image, seeking Your will in all things, as the Saints did. Please help me to devote myself, and all that I do, to Your glory, and to the service of my neighbors. Amen.
