Reflection: In every season of life, God calls us to a posture of honour — especially toward our parents. This commandment is unique; it’s the first one with a promise attached. God links honour with longevity and blessing, teaching us that respect, gratitude, and obedience are not just good manners — they are keys to a flourishing life. The story of Ruth and Naomi beautifully portrays this principle. Though Naomi wasn’t Ruth’s biological mother, Ruth honoured her like one. Even when Naomi urged her to return to her homeland, Ruth replied, “Where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay” (Ruth 1:16). Her loyalty, humility, and respect opened doors of divine favour. Ruth’s act of honour positioned her in the lineage of Jesus Himself.
