This week I have the honour of welcoming a true leader in Indigenous law and governance, Dr. John Borrows, also my second cousin. John is the Loveland Chair in Indigenous Law at the University of Toronto Law School and a globally recognized scholar whose work has reshaped our understanding of Indigenous legal traditions. He has been recognized with some of the highest honors in Canada, including the Killam Prize, the Molson Prize, and the Governor General's Innovation Award. In 2020, he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to law and reconciliation. John is also a proud member of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation, and his work deeply reflects his commitment to Indigenous resurgence, reconciliation, and justice. It's an absolute privilege to have him to the show!

In this episode, we discuss:

  • how to honour both the cycle breakers & cycle keepers of our lineage
  • a detailed examination of the Kegedonce-Jones geneaology
  • an understanding of Anishinaabe law
  • a deeper look at the powerful mission & legacy John is building
