  • 179 - Ohtani is a Dodger and Astros are at the Crossroads

This week Rex and Craig discuss Shohei Ohtani's record contract to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers and decision time for Houston in the  wake of an SB Nation article that ranks the Astro farm system 30th out of 30 teams going into 2024. The co-hosts also muse on Florida State's omission from the college football playoffs and the KISS farewell tour, which to nobody's surprise was no farewell at all.

Other relevant links - On Shohei Ohtani's endorsement income.

Errata: Chris Caupano was an All-Star in 2006.  The Muppets band was Dr. Teeth & the Electric Mayhem.

  • 172 - They Were Two People Desperate to Stay in the Game w/ Bob LeMoine

Bob LeMoine is the author of "When the Babe Went Back to Boston: Babe Ruth, Judge Fuchs and the Hapless Braves of 1935." The book recounts the story about Babe Ruth's final MLB season - about two months with Judge Emil Fuchs' Braves. Ruth by then was 40, out of shape and wholly at loss on the baseball field. Ruth hit .181 in 92 plate appearances for a financially strapped Braves team that finished 38-115 for the year. Ruth only lasted two months with the Braves, retiring on May 30. He added to his legend though with a grand finish - a 3-home run day at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh on May 25. LeMoine presents a fascinating story about two men - Ruth and Fuchs - who were brought together for one brief moment in history through their desperation to stay in Major League Baseball.

  • 171 - In Baseball, Anything Can Happen w/ Mike Felder

On July 18, 1994, the Houston Astros overcame an 11-0 deficit in the Astrodome to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 15-12. Houston Astro outfielder, Mike Felder, drove in the tying run in the Astros' 11-run sixth inning and later in the frame scored the go-ahead run. Felder, a 10-year Major League veteran, joins the show this week to talk about that game, his career and how to hit a knuckleball among other things. Felder went on to become a Major League and collegiate coach - he now coaches baseball at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, California.

ERRATA - According to Baseball-Reference.com, Mike Felder hit his first home run in County Stadium, Milwaukee.  Paul Gibson, a southpaw from Southampton NY, played 9 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Tigers, Mets and Yankees. He won 22 games, saved 11 in 319 MLB appearances. This is an MiLB write-up on El Paso's 35-21 win over Shreveport.

  • 170 - How the West Was Won

The Houston Astros were in first place in the American League West only 18 game days in 2023, but they ended the year with another divisional title and a first round bye. In this episode Craig and Rex look at the Astros furious final weekend run to the title, Kyle Tucker's bizarre did he or didn't he chase to a 30/30 season and the four wild card match-ups. We wrap up the episode discussing the movement to retire Roberto Clemente's number 21 league wide and we return to the Astros' retired number fetish.

Errata; "Kill the Umpire" (1950) starred Wiliam Bendix and Una Merkel. Did Craig really say, "Houston played good?"
