Hooks & Runs

Bill Bonham pitched 10 seasons for the Cubs and the Reds from 1971-80, appearing in 300 games, winning 75 and pitching almost 1,500 innings. In this episode we learn about Bonham's journey from undrafted free agent out of UCLA to his life as a Major League pitcher in the 1970s.

Errata: Ferguson Jenkins completed 30 of 39 starts in 1971, not 27 (Bill) or 29 (Craig). Bonham was drafted in the 31st round by the Angels in June 1966, in the 4th round in January 1967 by the Angels, and in the 31st round by the Orioles in June 1967.  Not an error but worth noting that Rich Reuschel won 214 games in his career and pitched to age 42. Craig was thinking pre-expansion - in the '70s teams played 18 games in their division (not 22) and 12 games against team in the other division.

Film critic and writer Derick McDuff (Underrated podcast) joins us this week to discuss baseball in film. We talked about whether baseball and time travel would mix, subject ideas for baseball films we'd like to see and why baseball is such fertile ground for filmmakers. We also each revealed our Top 5 baseball-related films.

Errata: The Harry F. character created by Eliot Asinof in "Eight Men Out" does make an appearance in John Sayles' film adaptation. Barry Levinson directed "The Natural," a film based upon the book by Bernard Malamud. Craig botched the title to the film "Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings," starring Billy Dee Williams, James Earl Jones and Richard Pryor.

In this special Easter weekend episode, recorded March 21, we look back at the Houston Astros' pre-season top ten prospects, according to John Sickels Minor League Ball blog. There are some familiar names (Carlos Correa, Lance McCullers, Jr.) and some unfamiliar (Jarred Cosart, Rio Ruiz) along with some forgotten (Domingo Santana) and one Astro fans wish they could forget. On the whole, a solid crop of prospects with some big stars mixed in with hard-luck stories and players that just never made the final jump to become a big league regular.

This is the first in a series for Hooks & Runs in 2023, focusing on Astro drafts and prospects.

Baseball writer and cultural historian Lee Lowenfish joins us this week to discuss his new book, "Baseball's Endangered Species: Inside the Craft of Scouting By Those Who Lived It." Lowenfish's book begins with Branch Rickey and the birth of the Major League Baseball farm system through the beginnings of the MLB amateur draft in 1965 to the present day with challenges brought on by analytics and reduced reliance on the personal observation and connection with young players scouts historically provided to teams.

Dr. David Jerome's new book, "Bill Virdon: A Life in Baseball" is about Bill Virdon, the National League Rookie of the Year in 1955 and a fixture as the Pittsburgh Pirate outfield for a decade. Later, Virdon served as a coach and manager in the big leagues. From 1975 until 1982, Virdon managed the Houston Astros, leading the team to its first divisional title in 1980.

We're joined in the interview by Virdon's widow, Shirley who shared some special memories of her favorite ballpark and how she met Bill. The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary a few weeks before Bill passed away in November 2021.

Dr. Elizabeth Strom joins us this episode to talk about the Tampa Bay Rays' new stadium project announced in late January. She has a unique insight - first, she has covered the Rays' years-long quest for a stadium upgrade for DRaysBay.com, the Rays blog on SBNation since 2016. She is also an associate professor in the School of Public Affairs at the University of South Florida in Tampa. where she researches in housing issues as well as urban politics & policy. She provides a fascinating look into how public-private stadium projects are evolving to serve their teams, fans and communities.

In part 2, Rex rates Rolling Stone magazine's top ten heavy metal songs of all time - five of which are either Black Sabbath songs from 1970 or songs by Black Sabbath  adjacent artists with none released after 1988.

"Previously, on Hooks & Runs" - Jacob Pomrenke, Episode 142.

Errata - The Rays were in the World Series in 2020, not 2019 - Craig knew that.

Jacob Pomrenke (jacobpomrenke.com), editor of "Scandal on the South Side: the 1919 Chicago White Sox" and current Director of Editorial Content for the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR). He joins us this week to talk about the 1919 Black Sox and the culture of gambling in sports, then and now.

Please consider ordering "Scandal on the South Side" through our Bookshop.org link below to help support the podcast, or if you are a SABR member, use your membership links for special deals on the book.

The Eight Black Sox Out were:
Eddie Cicotte - Pitcher
Oscar "Happy" Felsch - Right Field
Charles "Chick" Gandil - First Base
"Shoeless" Joe Jackson - Left Field
Fred McMullin - Utility Infielder
Charles "Swede" Risberg - Shortstop
Buck Weaver - Third Base
Lefty Wiliams - Pitcher

NBA official Tim Donaghy pleads guilty to conspiracy in the 2007 NBA betting scandal (CNN story). The ClearBuckWeaver.com website has correspondence relating to efforts through the 2010s made by Buck Weaver's descendants to get the third baseman reinstated.

Errata: Lefty Williams faced 5 batters, not 6 (Craig was right the first time) in Game 8. He allowed 4 hits (2 singles, 2 doubles) and retired the leadoff batter on an infield fly. To clarify the timeline, the Chicago grand jury referenced in the interview met in September 1920. The American League suspended the eight charged players in March 1921 and the jury acquitted them that August. The new commissioner, Judge Landis, issued the lifetime ban the next day.

Rich Engler has promoted rock concerts in and around Pittsburgh PA for over 50 years - at everything from small clubs to major stadiums such as Three Rivers Stadium, the Pittsburgh Steelers' former home stadium.  Engler joins Hooks & Runs this week to talk about highlights from his career in the music business, including being the first person to promote the infamous fake Fleetwood Mac tour in January 1974.

Engler wrote, "Behind the Stage Door: A Promoter's Life Behind the Scenes" in 2014. This book has been made into a documentary with the same title released in September 2022 to most streaming services.

Buy the book at Engler's website (richengler.com) or on the Hooks & Runs page at Bookshop.org (link below). This is the website (behindthestagedoor.com) for the documentary, including streaming options.

Engler promoted what turned out to be Bob Marley's final show on September 23, 1980, at the Stanley Theater, an event included in the documentary. This is a soundboard recording of that show (https://tinyurl.com/marley092380).

The Fleetwood Mac imposters? They went on to form Stretch and had a No. 16 hit single,  "Why Did You Do It?"
