There are many of us who have been traumatized by wicked people and even by those who are close to us. Sometimes when we suffer at the hands of others, our immediate reaction is to want see them suffer. Instead, as followers of Jesus, we must ask: what is our responsibility when it comes to praying for the people who have wounded us?

Scripture tells us that many years ago, God spoke through the Old Testament and the New Testament writers. However, what about in our present day and in our present time? Does he still speak today? If so, what does he say and how can we know that he is the one who is speaking?

Sometimes when we pray God answers our prayer immediately; but sometimes when we pray there’s nothing but awkward silence. As followers of Jesus, despite the doubt and confusion and pain of this present life, we believe that one day “all sad things will become untrue.” Yet, for many though we pray for ourselves, for a difficult situation, or for others that are going through a tough season it seems as though God is disengaged. So, how do we live in this tension until God’s kingdom come and his will is done on earth as it is done in heaven?

Studies tell us that roughly 94% of American adults pray. But if we’re honest, many of us aren’t really sure what to do during that time. Perhaps it’s because we don’t think God can actually give us answers to the problems we’re facing. Or, maybe it’s that we don’t think he wants to. But what if there’s somethingdeeper, just below the surface that cannot only give us the tools for a dynamic prayer life, it can actually create life itself.

Being an apprentice of Jesus means that we regularly run into the midst of the storm, into the chaos, into the fire for the sake of loving God and loving others. Unfortunately, this is not always a welcomed endeavor as some will see this as a threat to the “control” they are trying to create in their own lives and in the lives of those around them. However, what scripture teaches us is that there is nothing more Christ-like than suffering at the hands of others for the sake of others.

We live in a constant state of chaos— politically, culturally, relationally, and socially. Often, we try to create peace in the midst of the chaos by either avoiding it, forming a “sanctuary” that is disengaged and disinterested in the world around us. Or, we go on the offense, trying to create peace through forcing others to bend to our own sense of “right and wrong.” But the way of Jesus is different. It has an understanding of peace that doesn’t come from a “what” but from a “who” and Jesus says that those who truly
understand what this peace is are the true children of God.
