Modern psychologists tell us that we function best when we have something—a goal, a mission, an endgame – to wrap our lives around, a kingdom of sorts that gives us boundaries and purpose. Scripture tells us that this purpose is realized in something called “the kingdom of God.” The problem is that we all want the kingdom – love, purity, beauty, and joy – but we often don’t want the King.

Inside each of us there is a war between two kingdoms—a shadow kingdom of self, plagued by insecurity, anger, frustration and disappointment and a kingdom of reality, ruled by love, mercy, kindness, and peace. If the year 2020 with all of its political, social, and physical turmoil has taught us anything, it’s that many of us are caught in the crossfire between these two kingdoms.

We all love a good story. Whether it is science fiction, historical documentary, or romantic comedy, we are drawn to stories that pull us into their world. When we read Matthew’s biography of Jesus, we discover that it’s not an ordinary story—it’s an origin story. But not a story of how Jesus came into being. Because just like Jesus, though your family of origin may inform parts of your life, it does not have to determine it.
