How do you follow Jesus faithfully when the culture around you is constantly trying to tell you who you should be?

In Clash of Kingdoms: Part 1 — Living in Babylon, Pastor Tadd Grandstaff begins a journey through the book of Daniel and looks at what Daniel 1 teaches us about identity, conviction, and remaining faithful to God in a culture that doesn’t honor Him.

Daniel didn’t choose Babylon, but he did have to choose how he would live there. Before Babylon tried to change Daniel’s behavior, it tried to redefine his identity. But Daniel knew who he belonged to—and that changed how he lived.

In this message, we discover three anchors for living faithfully in Babylon:

• Babylon will try to tell you who you are—you have to know who God says you are.

• Knowing who you are determines how you live.

• Your identity has to be rooted deeper than your circumstances.

Daniel learned how to live in Babylon without letting Babylon live in him. As followers of Jesus, we’re called to do the same—not running from the culture around us and not becoming like it, but faithfully representing the Kingdom of God wherever He has placed us.

Circumstances change. Culture changes. Kings and kingdoms come and go. But God does not change, and His Kingdom lasts forever.

“Don’t trade an eternal identity for temporary acceptance.”

If your identity is rooted in Christ, your past, your failures, your circumstances, and the opinions of others no longer get the final word. Jesus does.

In Romans 12, Paul reminds us that every follower of Jesus has been uniquely gifted by God and given a meaningful place in the body of Christ. But before Paul talks about spiritual gifts or serving, he begins with surrender. We don’t serve to earn God’s love or acceptance. We serve because of the mercy and grace we’ve already received through Jesus.
