This special episode is a bonfire conversation with Hope’s founders and longtime staff, recorded for our 30th anniversary.
Thirty years ago, 14 people from a young marrieds Sunday school class sat in a living room wondering what this thing called Hope Community would be. They had no building and no money, and by their own account they did “so many dumb things” that God protected them through. Their stories keep circling back to the same two things: God providing what they didn’t have, and a church that became a family.
“God is starting new stories every day in the people that are walking through. And He’s not done.”

The Last Supper is one of the most memorable and iconic paintings ever painted, and it depicts the last time Jesus would eat a meal before his crucifixion. This week, we take a deeper dive into that night, and aim to make this familiar event shock us once again.

In this passage from Mark 14, a woman walks into a dinner party and breaks open a jar of (very!) expensive perfume pouring all of it on Jesus. Some respond with indignation stating, “Why this waste?!” In response, Jesus alludes to another broken jar, his own body, which will soon be broken and poured out. How will you and I respond to such “waste”?

Party loyalty says pick a side. Cancel culture says burn the bridge. But before either of those had a claim on us, the love of Christ already did. Truly, he is the only one strong enough to hold together unity amidst diversity and disagreement within the church.

In this, our second message in the Jesus First series, we look to Christ so that we might look more like Christ. This means we cast off the binary approach to politics and the ideological approach of negative partisanship. Instead, the love of Christ compels us to move toward the brokenness of our world with both compassion and conviction.

We launched our new series, Jesus First, exploring how we engage a hurting and divided culture, not by starting with “what should Christians think about X?” but by starting with Christ himself. From 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, we were reminded that of first importance is our shared belief that Christ died, was buried, and rose again. Before we can engage the pressing issues facing our city, we must not start with an issue, but with Jesus.

David wrote Psalm 63 farther from the sanctuary than he'd ever been — hunted, thirsty, surrounded by men who wanted him dead. And yet the closer danger comes, the more intimate his words to God become. What if the safest place was never the sanctuary at all?

People say Psalm 1 belongs in Proverbs and Psalm 2 belongs with the prophets. They're the weirdest psalms in the whole book. So why does the New Testament quote Psalm 2 more than almost any other? This week we look at the rule of the king, and how a coronation song for Israel ends up being all about King Jesus.
