In this first sermon in our "Not A Private Faith" series, we focus on Isaiah 1:10-20. In this passage God sends Isaiah to speak to wicked rulers and wicked people.

He tells them that God is fed up with their empty religious ceremonies while they have innocent blood on their hands.

He commands them to repent and to work to bring justice and correct oppression.

God then offers His forgiveness and promises to wipe away their sin should they come to Him on His terms.

From this passage we learn how to work to stop oppression in our day. It is no small task, but we must do it! Other passages include Provers 24:10-12, 25:26, 31:8-9.

In these final three verses of Stephen’s long message to the temple authorities, he transitions from the defendant to the prosecutor.

In this message on Acts 7:51-53, Stephen does as Peter had done previously and he proclaims the guilt of those who oppose him. They were the ones who killed God’s messengers. They are the ones who do not want to go along with the new thing that God is doing. They are the ones who have rejected the long awaited messiah.

In these three verses, Stephen shows us how to point out the guilt of others for the purpose of declaring to them God’s mercies in Jesus.

Stephen has more to say. In this third message on Stephen’s defense before the Jewish leaders in Acts 7:44-53, he spells out clearly what he believes about the Temple. He had been accused of speaking against it and he explains to his accusers that the Temple is not all that they think that it is. In fact God was now dwelling somewhere else entirely. Instead of the Jewish leaders repenting their rage only increases.

When Christ died on the cross the temple in Jerusalem was no longer needed. What happened? Why did this happen? What does it mean for us today? All this and more in this third message on Acts 7.

In this second message from Acts 7, the religious leaders hate Stephen and the Jesus that He proclaims and they want to kill Stephen just like they killed Jesus. This episode is actually a sermon on part of a sermon.

This week Stephen continues to defend himself against false accusations. In this passage (Acts 7:17-43) Stephen speak of Moses. Moses was a ruler, a redeemer, and a prophet that God sent to save the people and the people rejected Moses back then, just like they are rejecting Stephen and Jesus.

In this message we are challenged to make all of our life about Jesus and not about us, not about man-made religion, and not about the work of our hands.

The religious leaders hate Stephen and want him dead. In this message, Stephen defends himself against the false accusations that have been brought against him.

Stephen does this by telling the story of the Jewish nation. He starts by sharing how the nation began through Abraham. He then shares how God saved the nation by raising up Joseph and bringing Jacob's family to Egypt. As Stephen tells the story, He uses the Bible that the religious leaders know to lead them to the Jesus that they do not know.

What happens to God's people when they faithful deliver God's message to an ungodly world?

Opposition. Disputes. False Witnesses. Force. Death.

Stephen was ministering in the power and the Spirit of God. Some powerful people opposed him. This is nothing new. The same thing happened to Jesus and the prophets who went before him. The same thing will happen to us today if we speak up outside of the walls of our church building and call people to repentance. 

In this sermon, Kyle Truman encourages us to be faithful in calling the community to repentance. We are to expect opposition from some. We are to expect persecution and suffering. We are to recognize that we are in a spiritual battle and there are powerful forces at work to destroy all who would faithfully proclaim the message of God to an ungodly people. 

Here is the good news! As we proclaim God's message, we become more like Jesus. If we die because of our proclamation, we become more like Jesus. If we die, we will also rise again. That's right. Jesus rose from the dead, and so will all of God's people who persevere until the end.

In Acts 6:1-7 we see the young church in Jerusalem growing very quickly. The apostles were leading the way and as their responsibilities increased they weren’t able to do everything that they used to be able to do.

In this passage we see the apostles handle a complaint in a brilliant way.

As ministry responsibilities were delegated to others the apostles were able to devote themselves to the ministry of the word and prayer. As they did so the word of God increased, the number of disciples multiplied, and even some of their greatest enemies became part of the church.

At Hope Fellowship we are currently implementing some of the principles found in this passage. May God do a good work in our church family as a new chapter begins at Hope Fellowship.

Luke is taking a lot of time to tell us how things turn out. In our previous episode, we saw that the apostles were thrown into prison and were standing trial for filling the city of Jerusalem with the gospel of Jesus.

This week they take a beating and are released. The example they set for us in this passage is amazing. We overcome opposition to the gospel by supernatural, sacrificial, joyful obedience.

In this teaching from Acts 5:17-33 we see the church and the leaders of the church face great opposition from the local authorities. The passage starts off with the apostles being thrown into prison and it ends with the authorities wanting to kill them. 

How does the church move forward in the midst of such opposition? We move forward by continuing to tell the story of the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. As we do this we command faith and repentance, and we extend the offer of the Holy Spirit and forgiveness of sin.
