2 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

 

* Prayer for all (v 1-2)

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

* We are urged to pray

* General prayers – the concerns we normally think of in terms of our daily living, health, concerns,…

* Intercessions – Where we go to God on behalf of others.

* Thanksgivings – Thanking the Lord for His provision even in whom He ordains for our government

* Praying for all kinds of people – kings and all who are in high positions

* We pray for their salvation

* We pray for a government that will permit us to worship freely and to live lives that are peacable.

* Prayer is for a quiet, godly, and dignified life in our conduct

* The Christian life is not one that is supposed to necessarily attract negative attention

* We aren’t to go out of our way to be obnoxious

* Our conduct is to be dignified and godly and not bring disrepute upon the Church

* God Desires the Salvation of Sinners (v 3-4)

3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

* Earlier in 1 Tim 1 Paul reminds us that Christ came to die for sinners.

* It is the Father’s love of the world that He sent the Son to die that whoever believes in Him might have eternal life (John 3:16)

* We understand from other Scriptures that God has loved His own from the foundation of the world and provided for their sure salvation in the Son.

* But we are men and this reality is always the case – that God has provided for the salvation of sinners in Christ.

* We should never announce the Gospel leaving any in doubt that a sinner may come to Christ in faith.

* All who hear the Gospel are sinners and there is salvation to be found for all who come to Christ in faith.

* God saves men from all tribes, tongues, races, and nations.

* He saves the rich and the poor in Christ.

* He desires the salvation of people from every corner and we ought to always proclaim the desire of God for sinners to believe upon Christ.

* One Mediator (v 5-7)

5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. 14 But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 15 As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. 16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”

John 16:4-15 (ESV)

4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation

* The word faith in the New Testament has many aspects. For example, we call the Apostles’ Creed the articles of our Christian faith. However, this is not the meaning of faith that the writer of Hebrews conveys.

* For thos who wrote the Gospels, Jesus Christ is the object of faith. John summarizes this emphasis when he states the purpose of his Gospel, namely, “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). Also, the Acts show that in the first century, “a personal faith in Jesus was a hallmark of the early Christians.

* Still another aspect of faith is Paul’s emphasis on claiming salvation in Jesus Christ. Paul tells us that God puts the sinner right with him through faith: “This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe” (Rom. 3:22). And Paul explains that faith comes from hearing the Word proclaimed (Rom. 10:17).

* The author of Hebrews recognizes these same aspects of faith. The heroes of faith that we’re going to consider have one thing in common: they put their confidence in God. In spite of all their trials and difficult circumstances, they triumphed because of their trust in God.

* Faith, here,is clinging to the promises of God, depending on the Word of God, and remaining faithful to the Son of God.

* What is true faith? In 1563 a German theology professor, Zacharias Ursinus, formulated his personal faith:

* True faith— created in me by the Holy Spirit through the gospel— is not only a knowledge and conviction that everything that God reveals in his Word is true, but also a deep-rooted assurance that not only others, but I too, have had my sins forgiven, have been made forever right with God, and have been granted salvation. These are gifts of sheer grace earned for us by Christ.

* Faith, here in verses 1 and 2 has both a subjective aspect and an objective aspect.

* Faith is being sure of the things we hope for. It is an inner confidence that I know that what God has told me concerning His promises.  I have certainty in myheart.  It is subjective.

* But faith is also objective. It is the substance of things not seen.  The Person standing behind the Promise is God Himself.  It can be relied upon because of the reality and steadfastness of God.

* Faith then shapes the way we look at all our circumstances. We know the God Who has Promised and we live each moment of our lives in the reality of this Promise.

* We know with our minds and our hearts are then affectionate for the things we know.

* Our faith, our assurance, is based not on wishful thinking but on certainty.

* Faith, therefore, radiates from man’s inner being where hope resides to riches that are beyond his purview. Faith demonstrates itself in confident assurance and...

14 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
