July 04, 2021007.5 XTRAcast - Stand By Your Self
Pride is a tough topic for Oliver. From a young age, he felt the pressure of being the third Oliver James, feeling like he had to represent the family by holding the name. When he came out, he questioned whether he could do that any more. His father disowned him and said the rest of his family would never accept him.
“My first pride event was right after my father disowned me….I was mourning my mother who had just passed, and I was feeling like an orphan…”
These days, Oliver uses his meditation practice to unlock hearts and breaks chains.
“I have the ability to meet people where they are and help them find peace. That is my purpose.”
Oliver chooses to celebrate Pride in his own way, every day.
“I just have to remember that I’ve done the work. I have to remind myself that I have come so far. I am worthy of being here.”

Will we ever stop using our reverse gaydar to seek out homophobia?

How can we more fully value our unique queerness?

June 20, 2021 006.5: XTRAcast - Matthew has a Hate Crime
Hello world! XTRAcast is our in-between-shows episode where we reflect on the themes that came up in the last one, but this one is different. After performing in the final of Tia Kofi’s Sync or Sing in London last Friday, Matthew and his friends left the biggest gay nightclub in the country, excited after an amazing night. Within minutes, they experienced verbal and physical homophobic attacks from a group of boys in the street.
Matt and his friends are all fine, thankfully, but we wanted to share this story to illustrate the ease with which these hate crimes are still happening, in London, in 2021. Matt dealt with the situation with such incredible courage, power and grace, but he shouldn’t have to. Nobody should have to. The irony of this happening during Pride Month is not lost on us.
We feel it is important to be visible (if that’s possible on a podcast?) about the experiences of our queer family even when they are hard to hear. To our allies, we ask that you stand up and step in. To our queer siblings, we encourage you to walk the streets with power and pride. Do not shrink or hide away. We are not in the wrong.
If you experience or witness a homophobic hate crime, PLEASE report it to the Police. You can find more information and support in the UK from GALOP, the LGBT+ Anti-violence charity. We at HOPECAST are here for you. We stand with you. And we will see you at Bender Defenders!

Hello world! XTRAcast is our in-between-shows episode where we reflect on the themes that came up in the last one. Our show on milestone moments gave Anders “all the feels” so we talked about his own coming out story and what it’s like to grow up gay in a religious, conservative community. Spoiler: it’s hard.
Anders lived under the heavy burden of ‘hate the sin but love the sinner’ but at 18, after two years of trying to ‘pray the gay away’, he reached a turning point, describing it as “...a long painful period of denial, trying to fix myself, but then I truly broke through that when I finally decided...this is me. This God I believe in would have made me heterosexual if necessary. That made my God gentler.”
In this episode we also invent a time machine, ask what the bible says about soft furnishings and rose wine, as well as comparing the death of baby gay to Geri leaving the Spice Girls. It’s all very HOPECAST.
