A supplement to the earlier lesson in WSC56. Understanding Jesus's teaching about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit in light of the reason annexed to the third commandment.

Pastor walks his children through Westminster Shorter Catechism question 56- What is the reason annexed to the third commandment- The reason annexed to the third commandment is that however the breakers of this commandment may escape punishment from men, yet the Lord our God will not suffer them to escape his righteous judgment.

1. Covenant of grace. Earthly provision and the mitigation of the curse. -1.a. Gen 3-14-23 with worship purpose of 3-24-1.a.i. The Seed promise and the special care of those with child and their children, vv14-16, 20 -cf. 1Tim 2-15- n.b. the 'diaconal' nature of a redeemed husband--1.a.ii. The cursed ground and the groaning creation-diaconal need a guardian against complacency in a world of sin and a guide to desire for the sinless world, v17-19 -n.b. the 'diaconal' opportunity presented by any abundance, which prompts both a desire to have it and a priority if we do--1.a.iii. The atonement-reminding nature of every provision, v21 -cf. 2Cor 9-15--1.b. Gen 8-22-9-17 with worship purpose of 8-20-21-1.b.i. Renewal-reaffirmation of covenant grace manifested in diaconal terms-1.b.ii. God's earthly provision, 8-22, 9-3-1.b.iii. Man's earthly service in God's image- 9-1-2, 7

God's people are able to dwell safely near His glory only upon His provided terms and through His provided sacrifice.

God testifies about Himself by His works of common grace in the whole world and special grace among believers.--1. God testifies about Himself in -common grace.--1.a. All the good that He does to all His creatures -creation and providence--1.b. Rain from heaven, fruitful seasons-1.c. Physical neediness and fulfillment-1.d. Spiritual neediness and fulfillment-2. God testifies about Himself in -special grace- of conversion-2.a. God doesn't owe anyone -v16- to turn us from useless things -v15-. The preaching of repentance is a great mercy from God.-2.b. The giving of faith is a great mercy from God -cf. 13-48--2.c. Signs like in v8-10 affirmed the preaching and the faith -cf. 14-3- 2-43- 2Cor 12-11-12- Heb 2-3-4-. This was also true in Jesus's own ministry -cf. Mt 9-2-8- Mk 2-5-12- Lk 5-20-26- cp. Mt 13-57-58, Mk 6-4-6--3. God testifies to this -special grace- especially in sanctification-3.a. 13-52 more likely referring to fruit of the Spirit than signs of an apostle-3.b. vv19-20 are also -signs of an apostle- in the marvelous sanctification of Paul- -cf. 1Cor 4-9-16- 2Cor 12-12 vs 12-9-10-

If even the works of the law can't justify us, how can we be righteous before God- Romans 3-23-24 looks forward to the sermon in the midweek prayer meeting. In these two verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that in Jesus Christ, God has offered His own righteousness to sinners.

How does God witness to His goodness- Acts 14-8-20 looks forward to the morning sermon on the coming Lord's Day. In these thirteen verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that God witnesses to His goodness by giving faith, by common grace, and by sanctification.
