Pastor Sócrates has us consider the urgent need in our world for self-less love that originates with God, a love that the New Testament identifies with the Greek word agape. As servants of God and ambassadors for God, we need to live out this agape love in how we treat others. There are three traits we need to watch for in ourselves that tell us we are loving others the way God loves them. First, our love is "others seeking," not self-seeking. Second, our love is humble, not self-absorbed. Thirdly, our love demonstrates compassion, not condemnation. As we pray this week, let's ask God to show us what it look like in our daily lives to love with this agape love.

Thank you for joining us for today's worship service! Today, Pastor Chris continues with the idea of going deeper from his earlier message with our "Word of the Year." This is not meant to compare ourselves with others, nor is it an encouragement to greater theological complexity. We are encouraged to grow deeper than we have been before in our faith, in our faith-driven actions, and in our relationship with God.

As we go deeper, Pastor Chris gives us three thoughts to help us. First, the deeper life will require less, not more, activities, as we shed that which would distract us from our goals. Second, the deeper life will feel unfamiliar, and we will feel the urge to go back to what we know, but growth requires leaving the comfortable. Third, the deeper life is not one we can pursue alone. God's plan has always been for a community of faith to support each other, including the assurance in Hebrews 12:1 that "we are surrounded by so great a crowd of witnesses."

We have a tradition of making the first worship service of the new year a time of meditation and prayer for God's guidance and blessing on our church, our community, and on the ministries that God is calling us to do. In today's message, we consider Terah, recorded in Genesis 11 and 12, who was the father of Abram who later became Abraham. God blessed Terah and led him from his birthplace in Ur toward the land of Caanan, but Terah could only go part of the way in his grief over a son who died young. We see God's mercy and love given to Terah and his family even though Terah failed at the goal God had set for him. God's blessing are not conditional, and we do not earn God's blessings through what we achieve. God's blessings come to us not because of who we are but because God is love.

Thank you for joining us this Christmas Eve! Being such a popular holiday, most people know the "what," "when," "where," and "who" of Christmas, but the most important question to ask is "why?" Why did God send His only son Jesus to be the baby in the manger, the preacher on the hillside, and the man who was executed on a cross and rose again, defeating death?

One reason why is seen in the meaning of the name Jesus: "he saves." Jesus came to be the Savior for everyone. Another reason why is seen in the meaning of the name Emmanuel: "God with us." God demonstrated in the person of Jesus that there is nothing that God wouldn't do to reach every one of us with grace and love. On this Christmas Eve, open up and accept God's amazing gift of love!
