Context:
As countries continue to ramp up their climate change ambitions, the use of coal for energy generation is expected to diminish significantly. Consequently, the role of natural gas would be enhanced, as burning natural gas produces less GHG than burning coal and crude oil. Natural gas is, therefore, generally considered the cleanest fossil fuel.

However, methane emissions from the production, transport and use of natural gas present a challenge to the sustainability credentials of the natural gas industry. For gas to be widely accepted as more climate-friendly than coal, companies producing, processing, and transporting gas need to ensure that methane leaks are kept to a minimum.

About the Guest:
Braulio Pikman, Technical Director at ERM – Sustainability, Energy and Climate Change. Braulio is currently based in Sao Paulo and has been with ERM since 2008. He provides specialist sustainability and technical services for companies in the public and private sectors, as well as, to cities and countries. He has also been a consultant for UNFCCC since 2005 working for the clean development mechanism and as an expert reviewer for national inventories.

This interview was conducted in June of 2021 with Mr Martin Lambert, a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Energy Institute. Within this 30 min session, Mr Lambert provides insight into his work on the Gas Research Program at the OIES, hydrogen and a hydrogen-based economy, methane emissions, CCUS, and Carbon Taxes.

The gas industry is currently facing growing global competition from renewable sources of energy. For both electricity generation and domestic heating, gas compares favorably against coal for both efficiencies and for reduced carbon dioxide emissions. However, there is growing awareness that methane emissions from the gas industry can significantly affect climate change.

In this Al-Attiyah Foundation podcast, Mr. Bart Wauterickx, the CEO of Dutch-based company “The Sniffers” joins us to discuss the effects of Methane emissions, how they can be reduced, and what role they will play in the process of an energy transition, and in combating Climate Change.
