  • SE3 - "I'm Cooked" with Bats #3 - Easy Beef Stroganoff & and the walk launch chat

"I'm Cooked" with Bats - Special Edition #3 - East Beef Stroganoff.  Bats and I go through this recipe, and also have a chat about how the buildup to the Heart 2 Heart Walk launch at Parliament House takes a lot of personal preparation and is quite an emotional event within itself for the walk participants for a whole bunch of reasons.  As Vince always says, we might all be on the same walk, but everyone has their own journey to do.

  • EP7 - Senator Anne Urquhart - the 2019 Senate Report 'People behind 000'

    EP7 - Senator Anne Urquhart - OUT NOW! #nevergiveup

    ____

This episode of the Heart 2 Heart Walk Podcast was recorded in the Australian Parliament office of the Senate Chief Whip - Senator Anne Urquhart.  Now this title might make you think of an emotionless politician enforcing the rules of the senate, however nothing can be further than the truth.  First Responders will be hard pressed to find a more supportive, compassionate advocate for their cause, let alone having that person as the Chief Whip of the Senate.

We sit down in the Senators office and talk about all things 2019 Senate Inquiry report 'The people behind 000: Mental health of our first responders' of which Senator Urquhart was the driving force to establish and deliver.  True to her motto, #nevergiveup, Senator Urquhart has not let dust settle on this report, and is continuing to champion change through actioning this report she was instrumental in establishing with Simone Haigh ASM.  The Senate Report is available here.  The Beyond Blue report; Answering the Call is available here.

We talk about some important elements of the Senate Report that is the centre of the cause behind the Heart 2 Heart Walk 2023, including the recognition that some workers compensation systems for people affected by their First Responder roles are likened to a merry-go-round.  We also talk about Senator Jacqui Lambie, Simone Haigh ASM, Due South Tasmania, Dr Dan Pronk and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union.

With my anxiety off the charts on the day arriving at Parliament House, as I was packing my recording gear in the carpark into my bag, I forgot some critical components of the recording gear.  However as any seasoned first responder would do, I had packed a backup kit consisting of my field recording gear that I am planning to use during the walk which is what we used on the day, so please excuse the audio quality! I did my best, but PTSD is hard to manage some days....

Senator Anne Urquhart was truly amazing with the H2HWalk Podcast team, and a big shout out to her team - Lennie & Bronwyn that made this possible.

In this Heart 2 Heart Walk Podcast, Matt talks to Doctor Dan Pronk about some directly relevant issues facing First Responders both on duty, transitioning our of service and post service.

This is such an informative podcast for First Responders and front line workers, covering the complexities of acute and chronic stress effects, and how different levels of training and stress inoculation can help long term outcomes of people subjected to these stressful and traumatic events.  We also talk about how rumination, both as an individual and within groups can be both a positive and negative process, and the importance of having that empathetic support from colleagues is in dealing with the unique situations faced by our first responders.

Dan identifies some of the unique issues faced by our volunteer emergency services, both from a training perspective and more importantly recognising how challenging it can be for the average everyday community member turning out to serious and traumatic events in the middle of their normal daily life, and how that contrast can require some specific management strategies.

During this chat, Dan talks about the ever present stressors in front line roles, and we have a laugh about how teachers do a job every day neither of us would be comfortable with!  Further we talk about some of those often forgotten roles like Corrective Services/Prison Officers and how similar the issues faced can be across all of these professions including Police and Emergency Services.

Doctor Dan Pronk is the author of multiple best selling books, and also has a free newsletter titled "The Friday First Responder" which is loaded with really relevant short articles for Emergency Service Workers.

Check out Dan's books and sign up for the Friday First Responder newsletter and more on his website:  danpronk.com

We also talk about an awesome podcast on the Unforgiving 60 Podcast, hosted by Dan's brother Ben Pronk and Tim Curtis.  Check out this episode with Dr Richard Magtengaard for some great information about the psychiatry behind trauma exposure and service, including emergency services work.

  • EP5 - Simone Haigh ASM - Paramedic (TAS Ambulance) - 2019 Senate Report initiator.

SIMONE HAIGH ASM - Ambulance Tasmania Paramedic.

Simone talks to Matt about life as a paramedic in Tasmania, and describes the operational pressures faced by staff, both volunteer and permanent positions, and that common theme - the importance of our K9 companions.

Simone describes the impact of a close friend and colleagues suicide, and the relentless drive to address the issue which ultimately took her to have a chat with Senator Anne Urquhart which, with a lot of hard work behind the scenes, initiated the senate inquiry that lead to the release of the 2019 Senate Report - People behind 000: Mental health of our first responders; which is the focus of the Heart 2 Heart Walk.

Simone also talks about her frustrations with the lack of action taken in response to the report, and the great work going on in other countries that is yet to be followed by the Australian Government.  Her positions in various committees and boards have given her a unique national view of the problems faced within Ambulance and the emergency services more broadly which continues to motivate her not to give up on making sure change is mate to the issues faced by her colleagues.

Listen in on an awesome chat, and as Simone says, if you too see issues or problems that are affecting our front line services, speak up! and start with your local member of Parliament.  Go Simone !!!!!
