Jeff Meek purchased his first property in Hot Springs Village in August 1982. Jeff and his wife were teachers in Illinois. In June 2005 they moved into a house on Lake Balboa. The plan was to retire and try to catch fish. Life took a turn when Jeff followed his passion and curiosity about retired military veterans, which resulted in authoring the book, They Answered the Call: World War II Veterans Share Their Stories.

In short order, Jeff joined The Village Voice newspaper. Today, after retiring on 3 separate occasions, Jeff continues as the assignment editor of the Hot Springs Village Voice. He has recently published his third book on the JFK assassination. You can find all of his books on Amazon on this page.

Rotary Club of Hot Springs Village is always looking to expand membership. Mary Christians, from the membership committee, joins us today to tell us more.

Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Currently Hot Springs Village Rotary Morning Group is holding weekly meetings at Village United Methodist Church, 200 Carmona Road.  Meetings begin promptly at 7:30 AM and ends at 8:30 AM.  Guests and members are invited for a coffee/pastries social time starting at 7:00 AM.

The After Hours Group meets every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month.  They meet for Happy Hour at 5:00 PM and the meeting starts promptly at 5:30.  Their meetings are held at the Coronado Community Center 150 Ponderosa Lane, Meeting Room 11 & 12.

Mike McMillian, Chief Operating Officer of Brookhill Ranch says it is more than a ranch and church camp. In the 61 years since the founding of Brookhill over 60,000 kids have attended this ranch just south of Hot Springs Village. Originally founded by Don and Hettie Brooks in the summer of 1964 with seven campers, the ranch has steadily grown over the years and now accommodates over 2,500 campers each summer. The Ranch’s executive director is Lynlee McMillan, Mike’s wife.

Jerry Garganeous, 31 year veteran firefighter and fire investigator, tells us about major fire risks and how to avoid them. Jerry shares stories from his time as an investigator, including what it feels like to be so close the death. Below is a story produced by KTHV, channel 11 in Little Rock back in October, 2013.

PINE BLUFF, Ark.(KTHV) – A group of Pine Bluff firefighters are credited for saving the life of another firefighter after a fire on October 19.”Me and the other lieutenant we had got somehow separated in there,” said Lt. Jerry Garganeous, a 26-year veteran with the department.”It’s dark and it’s smoky and you really can’t see anything,” said Garganeous. He said with no light in the home, he felt his way through the structure; Garganeous said he then ran out of oxygen.”I ran out of air trying to find my way out,” he said.”When it runs out of air it literally sucks to your face,” he adds. After making a “may day” call over the radio, which indicated that a firefighter was in distress, Garganeous loss consciousness. He said his fellow fighters rescued him within a minute.”I’m glad I was there. Any one of the guys here would have done the same thing,” said firefighter Brody Channell. Channell has been with the department for two years and is one of the firefighters who rescued Garganeous. “It’s an amazing thing. There’s no way I can really express…me and my family…to these guys what they did for me,” said Lt. Garganeous.

From his very humble beginnings in Mississippi Jerry Kattwar crossed the Big Muddy and started connecting with great people in West Helena  and surrounding areas to learn what the Blues and the Delta really was about. In the process he spent over a year in the same hotel – The Sunset Inn in Helena – with Ronnie Hawkins, Levon Helm and other talented musicians. Jerry had no idea where these country people would end up and how they would influence music around the world from the Rolling Stones to The Beatles to Eric Clapton. Jerry and his brother Mike soaked in everything from the roots of Delta blues music to the chitlin circuit. Jerry notes he is the Last Man Standing. Jerry Lee Lewis, Conway Twitty and dozens more have passed but Jerry is still rocking at 81.
