Who is Dr. Rochelle Matthews-Somerville?
Rochelle Matthews-Somerville, Ph.D., co-founded EFM Educational Consultants in 2010 after teaching as a university professor for many years. She has dedicated more than 25 years to supporting individuals with ASD and other learning and developmental disabilities to lead healthy, productive lives. During her years of serving the community as a University Professor, Special Educator, Autism Specialist, and Educational Consultant in the Southern Maryland area, she and her husband were blessed to be surrounded by a vibrant homeschooling community. As a natural extension of their passion for learning, they decided to homeschool their six children -- and 15 years later, they are still going strong! Through her role as a homeschool mom and EFM, Dr. Somerville is dedicated to assisting families, especially those with homeschooling children with disabilities, to access high-quality, inclusive, community-based activities, programs, and resources that prepare their children for the future.

Welcome to Hot Topics! Gabrielle Crichlow talks to returning guest Darren Jones about the legalities of homeschooling (again!) and the ways that parents can be well-informed about it (again!).

Who is Darren Jones?
Darren Jones has been with the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) since 1996, serving as a legal assistant and an attorney in various capacities. At the office, he dedicates 40% of his time to assisting members facing legal difficulties, reassuring them that HSLDA supports them. Darren spends another 40% of his time advising homeschool group leaders on matters ranging from crafting statements of faith, with a preference for the Nicene Creed, to designing policies that protect children at co-ops. He allocates 10% of his time to writing legal briefs, often pondering how 30-page documents can be considered "brief," and another 10% to ensuring HSLDA and its sister organizations comply with the charitable solicitation laws of numerous jurisdictions. Throughout his work, he is 100% committed to advocating for parents' fundamental right to direct their children's education. Darren and his wife, Sara, have homeschooled their four children, with the oldest two having graduated. In his free time, he enjoys playing board games, teaching Sunday school, and speaking at homeschool conferences nationwide.

Who is Sandra Williams?
Sandra Williams is a retired teacher with 30 years of teaching experience. She has taught grades 1, 3, 4, and 5. She is the Owner/CEO of Alpha Kids, Inc. Her website, alphakidsinc.com, contains many teacher resources such as lesson plans, used books, editable materials, PowerPoints, and much more. Sandra has shared reading strategies that increase reading test scores with hundreds of teachers across America. She has also developed a musical phonics program called Launch Into Phonics. The phonics program includes a teacher’s guide, a downloadable MP4 player, and a student book. The teacher’s guide is written in English only or in English and Spanish. She is the author of the book Teaching in the Trenches. She shares the hilarious and heartbreaking accounts of her journey as a teacher and the positive effects of discipline and classroom management.

Welcome to Hot Topics! Gabrielle Crichlow talks to guest Whitnee Lowe (aka W.L. Carol) along with her mother Cissy Lowe about growing up with Asperger's Syndrome, understanding the symptoms, and learning how to manage the disability.

Who is Whitnee Lowe (aka W.L. Carol)?
W. L. Carol was born and raised in the state of Texas. After showing some signs of being autistic, she spent some of her preschool years at an early childhood center. At eight years old, Carol was finally diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. During her academic career, Carol earned a bachelor’s in mass communication and a master’s in journalism, library science, and Women’s Studies. W. L. Carol is pursuing her dream as an author and has recently published her debut novel, Raising Limbo. When she’s not typing away at the computer, she’s enjoying her favorite anime, manga, and video games.
