Hotel workers face tough road ahead in strike negotiations

Today: it's Day two of a three-day strike of hotel workers across the country, including right here in the Bay Area. More than 10,000 workers at 25 hotels nationwide are demanding better pay and workloads—nearly a quarter of those workers are in San Francisco and San Jose.

The workers say wages and benefits have not kept pace with the Bay Area's soaring cost of living, but critics question the feasibility of their demands, given San Francisco's low post-pandemic hotel occupancy rates and property owners' ongoing financial woes.

For a closer look, KCBS Radio news anchors Margie Shafer and Eric Thomas spoke with Bill Gould, the Beardsley Emeritus Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and former Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board. His 12th book, Those Who Travail and are Heavy Laden: Memoir of a Labor Lawyer, comes out next year.
