Chris Wright serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Liberty Oilfield Services.  Additionally, Chris founded and serves as Executive Chairman of Liberty Resources, a Bakken-focused E&P company and Liberty Midstream Solutions. He has had a lifelong passion for energy and its role in human life.  He has spoken on energy to the UK House of Lords, the States Attorneys General, Federal and State Judges, debated the merits of the shale revolution on TV and given over 100 talks.

Chris completed an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at MIT and graduate work in Electrical Engineering at both UC Berkeley and MIT. Chris founded Pinnacle Technologies and from 1992 - 2006 years served as CEO. Pinnacle created the hydraulic fracture mapping industry. Pinnacle's innovations in fracturing practices helped launch commercial shale gas production in the late 1990’s.

Chris was Chairman of Stroud Energy, an early shale gas producer, prior to its sale to Range Resources in 2006. Chris currently serves on the Board of Directors for Liberty Resources, Urban Solutions Group, US Ceramics and the Federal Reserve Bank, Denver Branch.

Chris also worked on fusion energy, solar energy, and geothermal energy. Chris grew up in Colorado and is a passionate skier, cyclist, climber, and outdoor enthusiast. He serves on the board of numerous nonprofits including PERC, ACE Colorado, ACE Montana, PRI, and the YCCF.

It’s hard to say “favorite” episode because I love them all. Every conversation I have, I learn, and its my favorite thing about hosting a podcast - the guests. But. I really liked this conversation with Mark P. Mills of the Manhattan Institute.

For the past three years, Johan Themaat has been leading the Black Canyon Midstream team. Johan grew up in South Africa, where he received his engineering degree.  Johan moved to the US twenty years ago to pursue an MBA.  After completing an MBA at Tulane University in New Orleans, Johan fell into the energy business as an investment banker in Houston focused on the midstream sector.  In 2011, after a few Colorado ski vacations, Johan and his family moved to Denver, which he is thrilled to call home.  In Denver, Johan joined High Sierra Energy, later acquired by NGL Energy Partners, as a Vice President, responsible for M&A and Investor Relations.  At High Sierra Energy and NGL, Johan helped grow the water midstream and crude midstream businesses, and supported M&A activities across the company.  Since 2014, Johan has been an entrepreneur, first starting First River Energy, a crude gathering company, and joining Black Canyon Midstream in the second half of 2016.

I am representing Energy Strong and myself – a front range citizen in this discussion, which is essentially extremist Boulder politicians vs the entire state.

3 basic themes my comments will cover

* Fossil Fuels are extremely safe and have made our lives better than at any time in human history, despite anecdotal claims to the contrary.

* There is a massive Health and Safety risk of transitioning away from Fossil Fuels – which are reliable – for renewables, which are intermittent.

* Economic risk SB-181 poses.

I love Colorado. I’ve been here my whole life, and despite our population growing exponentially, the air and water are cleaner today than they were in 1978 the year I was born. Overall, besides urban sprawl, the state is in better shape than ever before (in terms of environment) Colorado has been producing oil for over 100 years and has some of the lowest overall cancer rates and the best qualities of life in the nation.

I get that people wish the world had a static climate, but it never has, and it never will – the truth is that everyone on this call uses oil and natural gas because it makes their lives better and protects us all from Colorado’s natural climate, which has always been a dangerous place to live. One of the critics of the overvaluation in the early days was Scott Lapierre, who joins me this week to talk about what what wrong, how do we know, and how do we fix it. About Scott

Shale Specialists was founded by Scott Lapierre in June of 2016 with the goal of offering his impactful, extensively integrated across disciplines, and proven innovations in shale reservoir characterization to the industry at large.

After graduating in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in geology from the University of South Alabama, Scott began his oil industry career in operations as a formation evaluation field engineer assigned in the GOM deepwater and shelf. In 2005 Scott transitioned from data acquisition to data interpretation by joining ConocoPhillips as a petrophysicist in their Subsurface Technology group.

As the Shale Resource Revolution exploded onto the scene in 2007, Scott had been testing and developing shale-specific log interpretation and core measurement techniques to extract critical information that could be used to gain a technical exploration advantage in prospecting for shales.

In 2009 Scott joined Pioneer Natural Resources to help them explore for opportunities to produce liquids from shales. From 2009 to 2012, Scott leveraged global access to log and core data to further develop and test log interpretation, core processing, and mapping techniques to precisely determine hydrocarbon concentrations from legacy data to support competitive exploration. His pioneering integration of geochemistry with petrophysical interpretation enabled the use of original oil-in-place (OOIP) as a primary tool for exploration and development.

By 2013, Scott had shifted focus toward follow-up review of maturing prospects heavily steered toward using his OOIP work products. In trying to understand why two shales with nearly identical hydrocarbon quantities, mineralogies and reservoir pressures would recover dramatically different oil and gas quantities he discovered but one explanation capable of explaining all such observations.

If he modeled the primary source of mechanical energy driving oil production to the surface as being dominated by oil-phase expansion, all observed variations could be explained. In essence, Scott had discovered that the industry-wide assumption that reservoir drive energy was dominated by solution gas expansion, a conventionally gracious reservoir drive mechanism (i.e. capable of high recovery efficiency), was incorrect.

Such a discovery bore good news and bad news. The good news was that recovery factor need no longer be relegated to a reactive, after-the-fact sanity check of the reasonability of forecasts. Instead, recovery factor could now be proactively predetermined independent of any production or knowledge of hydrocarbon concentration. The bad news? When recovery factor was combined with OOIP to compute Recoverable Oil-in-Place,
