"May one partake of the Lord's Supper before he is indulged with undoubted assurance of a personal interest in Christ?" It is easy to answer in the affirmative. If assurance of salvation were absolutely necessary to qualify for the Lord's table, then worthy communicants would be much fewer than they are. And if that were the case, it would easily appear that our blessed Redeemer had appointed the sacred supper, not for the babes in his house, but for the strong men in his family. This would be very discouraging to the weak-minded. And I am persuaded it was far from the design of the tender-hearted Shepherd, who is so mindful of his lambs, and so compassionate, that he gathers them in his arms, and carries them in his bosom.

During biblical times, most people wore sandals and walked from place to place on dirty roads. Because of that, it was common to find a basin of water near the entrance of every house for foot washing. Sometimes, the guest would have to wash his own feet. At other times, a servant would be provided to wash people's feet. Imagine what it would have been like to have the servant's job of washing people's feet. That would not be an enjoyable job—especially on a hot day. However, the guests would certainly appreciate the service rendered. In today's passage, Jesus and His disciples had arrived at their destination and were about to eat supper. No doubt they had walked a distance to get there and had dirty feet. But when they arrived, there was no servant waiting to wash the dirt off of their feet. What were they to do? To the surprise of the disciples, Jesus got up and washed each disciple's feet. He used this act of humility to teach them the important truths we will see today.

A House Filled With Fragrance This message moves through John 10–12 and shows how one gathering in Bethany became a living picture of what Jesus does in people. Around the table were Lazarus, Martha, Mary, Simon the leper, Judas, the disciples, and Jesus—each one revealing something different. Lazarus was living evidence of resurrection power. Martha was serving. Mary was worshiping. Simon's house bore testimony to restoring grace. Judas exposed the danger of staying close to Jesus while never surrendering the heart. The disciples show us how easy it is to allow the wrong influence to manipulate a group. Lazarus reminds us that a changed life is a powerful witness. He had been dead, but now he was sitting at the table with Jesus. The religious leaders wanted to kill him because his very existence pointed people to Christ. They could not comfortably dismiss the evidence, so they sought to remove it. In the same way, believers ought to live as evidence that Jesus still gives life. We are not the message, but transformed people of the message and ministry of Jesus who are living witnesses to the power of the gospel of His grace. Martha and Mary teach us the proper relationship between seeking and serving. Martha served, and service is good and necessary. Mary remained closely associated with the feet of Jesus. The lesson is not that service is inferior, but that service must flow from fellowship. We do not neglect His feet in order to work for Him; we serve from His feet. Public ministry for the Lord requires private moments with the Lord. Mary then poured out the costly perfume upon Jesus, and Jesus described her action beautifully: "She has done what she could."
