Every month since April, around 30% of Americans have missed their housing payments. The federal eviction safeguard, along with the other benefits of the CARES Act, expired last week on July 31, leaving an estimated 40% of American renters vulnerable to losing their housing this month without renewed protections.

Today on the show, Patty talks about housing precarity and eviction during the pandemic with Andrew Aurand from the National Low Income Housing Coalition. They cover topics like the shortage of affordable and available rental housing in the U.S., the history of redlining and racism in housing policy, and the vital need for continued housing assistance during the pandemic.

Andrew Aurand is Vice President for Research at the National Low Income Housing Coalition, where he leads NLIHC’s research team that annually documents the housing needs of low income renters and conducts research that informs housing policy. Prior to joining NLIHC, Andrew was a faculty of Urban and Regional Planning at Florida State University.
