In the midst of persecution, the church at Thessalonica still flourished because the Apostle Paul sets the right example for the Thessalonians to follow as a bold proclaimer and as a loving parent.  It is not enough to bring others to Christ, but also to help them to become disciples of Christ.

On the third Sunday of January, churches across our nation observe Sanctity of Human Life Sunday as a way to commemorate the lives lost to abortion since Roe v. Wade on January 23, 1973. This morning we will see how the Parable of the Good Samaritan affirms the dignity of every human person – no matter their size – and how it calls us to show neighborly love towards all, including the inhabitants of the womb.

The Church in Thessalonica became known throughout all of Macedonia and Achaia because of the example they set for all the believers. Paul encourages the Thessalonians for their Work of Faith, Labor in Love, and Steadfastness in hope in Jesus Christ. As we hope to grow as a flourishing church, we can also look to the church in Thessalonica as an example to follow in faith, love, and hope.

And yet in spite of the challenges, the church continued to flourish in the gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit. The theme of salvation by way of substitution runs throughout the Bible. It began with sheep in the place of sinners, but by the time we reach Isaiah 53, the substitutionary sheep is replaced by a person – the Servant of the LORD. We are told that this enigmatic figure will manifest God’s own saving power, and yet he will be despised and rejected by those he came to save. He will be as innocent as a lamb, and yet he will be counted and punished as a transgressor. Who has believed this perplexing message?
