  • Don't Mow Too Low & Your Other Questions Answered

Lawn Care Tips for Winter and Frequently Asked Questions About Grass Farming

In this episode, Michael from Houston Grass discusses seasonal lawn care and answers common questions about grass farming. Towards the end of November, he recommends keeping grass longer to protect it from frost and maintaining mowing height at around three and a half inches. Issues with brown patch are expected due to warmer days and cool nights, and he suggests that irrigation systems be turned off during this time to save on water bills. Fertilizing is also not recommended until ground temperature exceeds 70 degrees, likely in late February or March. Questions about grass farming include how to prevent field erosion and maintain lush and dense grass as well as weed prevention. The use of pre-emergents, frequent mowing, and irrigation is common. Chemicals unavailable to homeowners are also used when necessary to address weed problems.

  • It's HOT! How to Care for Your Grass Now

Thanks for listening to the June edition of the Houston Grass Podcast. These are the main points made by Michael during the show.

    • If you don't water enough or you miss areas of your lawn, chinch bugs will appear. They are always looking for drought-stressed grass.
    • However, lots of moisture and shade will give rise to gray leaf spot. If you're installing Palmetto St. Augustine in shadier areas and watering as you should to give the grass a good start, you should also apply Heritage G herbicide to your grass to prevent gray leaf spot.
    • Please plan to install your grass the day it's delivered. If you leave it on the pallet for a day it will start to dry out.
    • Even our most shade tolerant grasses require four to five hours of direct sunlight per day. If some old oak trees are preventing you from getting that, you'll need to thin the canopy or remove them to give your new grass the sunlight it needs.
    • Do not use selective herbicides on your grass during the summer heat. It will kill your grass.

  • Caring for Your Grass During Houston's Summer Heat

Thanks for listening to the May edition of the Houston Grass Podcast. These are the main points made by Michael during the show.

    • It's the end of May and the end of the time to apply Nitro-Phos Superturf to give your lawn the slow release nitrogen it needs all summer long.
    • We've had lots of rain, but as we move into the hot summer months if the rain stops and if you're not watering enough the chinch bugs will move in. They are always looking for drought-stressed grass.
    • However, lots of moisture and shade will give rise to gray leaf spot. If you're installing Palisades Zoysia in shadier areas and watering as you should to give the grass a good start, you should also apply Heritage G herbicide to your grass to prevent gray leaf spot.
    • During Houston's hot summer, you should adjust mowing height to retain moisture and using a sharp blade for clean cuts.
    • Address yellowing grass with Ironite to restore color and promote healthy growth.
    • We've had a busy spring and some varieties were in short supply. Our farm is telling us that we'll be getting Palisades Zoysia again in mid-June. We have limited supplies of Palmetto St. Augustine and our two varieties of Bermuda grass. Call us for availability.

  • Get Your Lawn Ready for the Heat of Houston's Summer

Thanks for watching the April edition of the Houston Grass Podcast. These are the main points made by Michael during the show.

    • April and May are the best times to plant grass. Call us at 281-431-7441 for answers to your questions and a quote for your project.
    • It's too late to apply a weed and feed to your lawn. May is a great time to apply Nitro-Phos Superturf thought to give your lawn the slow release nitrogen it needs all summer long.
    • May is also a great time to apply the Nitro-Phos Barricade Pre-Emergent herbicide.
    • We've had some good rainfalls to the south as well as to the north of Houston. Please remember that your grass needs an inch of water a week, either from the sky or from irrigation.
    • It's also time to be mowing your lawn at least once a week.
    • You can replace your grass in a more affordable way and also install shade tolerant grass where it's needed by combining Raleigh St. Augustine with Palmetto St. Augustine. We're also selling Palmetto St. Augustine by the piece during the last couple of days of the week. Please call us before you come to our office to check availability.
    • A good way to measure the sunlight your lawn gets through the day is to use your phone to take pictures of your lawn every hour through the day. By scrolling through the pictures at the end of the day, you'll be able to get a good estimate of how much sun different sections of your lawn get through the day.

If you have any questions about these topics, please call our office at 281-431-7441.  Thanks for listening!
