How Albinism Affects Skin, Hair, and Vision

Listen Later

Albinism is a genetic condition marked by minimal or no melanin production, affecting skin, hair, and eye color. Individuals with albinism often have lighter skin, hair, and eyes than their non-affected family members. They may face vision challenges and are more prone to sunburn and skin cancers.

The condition affects humans, animals, and plants, inherited recessively in humans, requiring both parents to carry the gene.

Melanin deficiency can cause eye issues like nystagmus (involuntary movement), strabismus (crossed eyes), and photophobia (light sensitivity).
