In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with managing director of Luminar, Matt Ellis, and the founder of Mingle Seasoning, Jordyn Evans, about short-run digital packaging solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their impacts on the company’s growth.

Jordyn kicks off the discussion telling us about how Mingle, which started six years ago in her kitchen and was inspired by the lack of healthy seasonings available in the market, is now shaking up the seasonings category nationwide. Following this, Matt explores the evolution of Luminar first starting as a family business and adapting to provide SMEs with a packaging solution (digitally printed labels and flexible packaging) which allows for variation and low order quantities.

The discussion then moves on to the difficulties that Mingle faced in finding a supplier who could provide them with packaging for their small volumes and how Luminar met this challenge. We also explore how packaging suppliers can optimise growth for modern entrepreneurs and discuss the value of considering packaging design first when developing a new product.

We wrap up the episode by looking at Mingle's plans to roll out new products for the major supermarkets and utilise their online business to innovate and trial new products. In turn, Luminar is aiming to ensure it can provide an on demand and fast turnaround service for SMEs through more automation, communication, and team alignment.
