How Do We Rest During the Holidays?

Listen Later

As we approach the holiday season with speed, we’re not going to talk gift guides and travel tips. We’re not going to celebrate the perfect Thanksgiving spread or Christmas decor. We’re going to talk about rest. I know, I know what you’re thinking. REST?? This is the single most hectic, busy, party-filled season of the year, and you think any of us will have time to rest?

I hear you on that. And a little more than a year ago, I would have felt just the same way. But a lot of my personal struggles this year have given me no other option but to slow down. Pushing harder didn’t get me further faster, it got me broken down quicker.

And regardless of how much we love Christmas and many things about this season, I feel like all of us, especially as women, we push so hard we end up breaking down. I mean holidays are parties and shopping and cooking and traveling and all the things we love on Pinterest but kind of hate in practice. And yes, it’s supposed to be a time of celebration and fellowship and joy. But it’s also intended for rest – to breathe much needed life into us at the end of a taxing year, not to leech our the last bit we have left. It’s literally a time for thanksgiving and celebrating new life! That’s the whole point. So for the remaining three biweekly episodes of She’s in the City for 2019, we’re not going to give decorating tips or must have shopping lists or recipes. We’re simply going to talk about, dive into, and try gain a little more understanding of biblical rest and how badly we need it.

As we head into the holiday season and walk through all this year’s parties and demands and frenzy of festivities, I beg you to ask the question, “Do I feel rested?” If you’re anything like us, that answer is definitely no more times than it’s yes, and in the rare moments where the answer is yes, are you then struck with anxiety about how much is still left to do? Probably. And this is so natural! It’s a fun time which means it’s a busy time, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But what we’re working on (with great struggle) and what we’re hoping for you is that in the midst of the planning and card sending and gift shopping is that you take small efforts in small moments to let yourself accept the ultimate gift of rest that Christ longs to give you more of this year, in this season.
