In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Richard T. Lee, who was an instrumental member of the committee to analyze and review the health literature related to integrative approaches to manage pain in patients with cancer. The Society of Integrative Oncology (SIO) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) published the guidelines developed by the committee. The guidelines recommend and rate the level of evidence for specific integrative approaches, like acupuncture, acupressure, hypnosis, and massage, to manage pain from cancer. Dr. Lee is the Medical director of the Integrative Medicine Program at City of Hope. As an oncologist, his philosophy is all about treating the whole patient by bringing together Western medicine with integrative therapies.

In this episode, Dr. Lauri Medina joins the program to discuss her path to integrative health and whole person care as a surgeon in rural Colorado. She always knew there was more to health. As one of the instructors of our new CME Course: Introducing Whole Person Care Into Your Practice, she strongly urges all clinicians and clinical teams to explore the course. She shares how she incorporates the HOPE note and the Personal Health Inventory into her practice using it not only with her patients, but with her whole team. Listen as she describes what she gained by being one of the CME instructors and taking the course herself. “For most of us, we'd like to contribute and make the world a better place, and we know that one of the key components of wellbeing is having a sense of purpose. So if we can re-identify with this sense of purpose and then use the tools that are provided with this course, help use these tools to facilitate this sense of purpose that improves our own wellbeing. Begin by taking the personal health inventory ourselves and sharing it with our team members.”

In this episode, I had the extreme pleasure to sit down and speak with Dr. Gladys McGarey, who has just published her latest book, “The Well-Live Life, A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age.” How often can you say you had the chance to speak with a centenarian, especially one as accomplished as Dr. Gladys? She is known as the “mother of holistic medicine.” During our conversation, she shares stories about growing up in India learning from her physician parents, describes how she rejuvenates her “juice” by having purpose and love in her life, and explains her ten-year plan to create a village of living medicine. She instills in us her six secrets to living a well-lived life and implores everyone to find humor in tragedy and to let go of things that don’t matter using the Hindustani phrase “kuchi pruwani.” If only we all could have such a fulfilled, loving life as Dr. Gladys.

In this episode, I’m joined by the effervescent Jasmine Souers. She is the CEO and founder of The Missing Pink Breast Cancer Alliance (https://themissingpink.org ). The Missing Pink’s mission is to connect change agents in the pursuit of health equity for communities of color affected by breast cancer.

Jasmine has first-hand experience with breast cancer. She received her diagnosis at the young age of 26, and from that day forward has made it her mission to advocate for ALL people affected by breast cancer, especially people of color. As we discuss in our interview, she believes change happens on the ground when we combine “innovation with collaboration.” There is plenty of research to show what needs to happen, so let's work together to make change happen today. Taking from her personal experience and many years advocating for others, Jasmine shares how to develop trust with your patients, how to create a healing plan focused on what matters to patients, and how to make integrative oncology resources available to everyone.

Welcome to our inaugural episode of How Healing Works! I'm happy you're here.

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Kavitha Reddy, the Associate Director of Employee Whole Health in the VHA Office of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation (OPCC & CT). Dr. Reddy has a wealth of knowledge to share in the area of whole person care. This is why I asked her to be our first guest. We discuss the Veterans Affairs’ perspective on whole person care through a program called Whole Health (https://www.va.gov/WHOLEHEALTH/), including the use of a tool they created and I’ve adapted for non-VA environments called the Personal Health Inventory. 
We explore questions that clinicians can ask their patients and themselves to understand them as a whole person. One question I like to start with is: “What matters to you?” This simple question can jumpstart a journey to healing. In our conversation we also discuss, "How do you motivate and engage your patients to care about their health? As Dr. Reddy says, “It's all interconnected. If you want to work on your sleep, and that's where your motivation is, it will absolutely impact how you eat, how you move, how you're able to work with your colleagues and interact with your family. There's no wrong starting point and I think that's the part of the transformation piece. We're used to sharing our information and wanting to fix. We have to step back and let them express where they're motivated to start and then we start to see meaningful change.”
