How I Decided to Promote Myself from UN P3 to D1 – Outside the System

For many humanitarians, the dream has always been clear:
climb the ladder to P5, D1, D2, D3… and finally reach that level where you have both impact and influence.

We’ve been taught—explicitly and implicitly—that this is how you make a difference: through the system, through the title, through the contract.

But what happens when the system can no longer carry that dream?

With the funding crisis and widespread restructuring, countless colleagues now face a brutal reality:

• The structures still exist on paper.
• The titles still exist in theory.
• But the actual opportunity to reach those roles—and the level of impact they represent—has become uncertain, or even impossible.

If you’ve built your whole life and career around reaching a certain level of impact and success, and suddenly that path is blocked or disappears… what then?

This is the question I am answering for myself this year.
