Publisher's Summary:

Long before they meet, Miss Elizabeth Bennet entertains notions of Mr. Darcy as being good-natured, compassionate, and exceedingly handsome. Indeed, everything a gentleman ought to be.

In light of the ardent disdain that he incites in her family and friends at the Meryton assembly, reconciling her favorable impression of him proves deeply unsettling. Hence she goes about making out his true nature.

Boasting to the gentleman of an acquaintance with his worst enemy hardly recommends her to him. Tempestuous sparks promise to ignite into passionate flames as Darcy and Elizabeth endeavor to sketch each other's character.

Title: The Canterbury Tales: The Seaman's Tale (Modern Verse Translation)

Author: Geoffrey Chaucer

Narrator: Timothy West

Format: Unabridged

Length: 25 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-14-13

Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes

Genres: Classics, British Literature

Publisher's Summary:

This is a story from the Canterbury Tales III: Modern Verse Translation collection.

Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, a collection of narratives written between 1387 and 1400, tells of a group of 30 people from all layers of society who pass the time along their pilgrimage to Canterbury by telling stories to one another, their interaction mediated (at times) by the affable host - Chaucer himself. Naxos AudioBooks' third volume presents the tales of six people, here in an unabridged modern verse translation (by Frank Ernest Hill, 1935). This is an ideal way to appreciate the genuinely funny and droll talent of England's early master storyteller. Seven leading British actors bring the medieval world into the 21st century, and at least in terms of character, not much seems to have changed!

Editorial Reviews:

Chaucers Seaman tells a story to his fellow pilgrims of a monk, a merchant, and the merchants wife, and how they mix commerce, friendship, sex, secrets, and lies in this selection from Frank Ernest Hills modern English translation of Geoffrey Chaucers Canterbury Tales. The esteemed British actor Richard West, CBE, applies rich tones, and a fluency with accents and pacing. His performance creates an intimacy between the tales narrator and listeners in this original audiobook production, as well as clearly demonstrating the humor and humanity Chaucer embedded within these classic stories.

Critic Reviews:

(Bernard Shaw)

Title: Fenny

Format: Unabridged

Length: 12 hrs and 6 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-10-13

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 6 votes

Genres: Classics, British Literature

Publisher's Summary:

The offer of a summer post as governess to the granddaughter of a famous actress seems a dazzling prospect to Ellen Fenwick, far removed from the fireside teas and prize-givings of her Yorkshire high school. And the Villa Meridiana, surveying the Tuscan hills with their vines and rows of silvery olives, provides a dreamlike setting for the new life she anticipates. Here she tastes her first cocktail, cuts her hair, becomes 'Fenny' - and falls in love.

But in this close-knit expatriate community, relationships are often not what they seem: As fascism threatens the heart of Italy, Fenny is forced to come to terms with both emotional and political realities. Moving from 1933 to 1949, this is a stirring account of Fenny's development and of the experiences that shape the resilient woman she becomes.

Lettice Cooper (1897-1994) was an English writer. She was born in Eccles, Lancashire, on 3 September, 1897. She began to write stories when she was seven, and studied classics at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, graduating in 1918.

She returned home after Oxford to work for her familys engineering firm and wrote her first novel, The Lighted Room, in 1925. She spent a year as associate editor at Time and Tide and during the Second World War worked for the Ministry of Foods public relations division. Between 1947 and 1957 she was fiction reviewer for the Yorkshire Post. She was one of the founders of the Writers Action Group along with Brigid Brophy, Maureen Duffy, Francis King, and Michael Levy and received an OBE for her work in achieving Public Lending Rights. In 1987 at the age of 90 she was awarded the Freedom of the City of Leeds. She never married and died on 24 July, 1994, in Coltishall, Norfolk.
